Seems I have me a new neighbor and he's already raised some concern as to our firearm usage and how my burm did not meet the states requirements. I figured a 6' pile of dirt and logs would be sufficient however he quoted something else. We are not bound by any city limits just city police jurisdiction. Anyone have any experience with this?

So, are You shooting towards his House? Is His house on the other side of the Burm? If You answered "No" to both of these questions, I wouldn't be to concerned about it.

I'm not aware of any state requirements when it comes to target shooting. There might be some for a public range but I'm not aware of any for private.

The state can't mandate any berm size for your personal range that you only use for recreational use. Now, your homeowner's insurance could be a whole different ball of wax if the neighbor contacts them. Best advice is to be damn sure you're 100% safe in what you're doing. If there's no chance of his property being hit by direct or indirect gunfire I'd tell him to do something with hot coals wink

Get the F out of the BATFE. The F is guaranteed by the US Constitution. Those other letters are not.

I don't feel a stray rd has ever impacted his property or I never would shoot in that direction. There's 80 yds of timber between us and his house is 200yds away from my berm, not in the path but say 10'o'clock away. I don't shoot hi powered rifles anymore on my property just 22.

A good old GFY should be sufficient.

Pin is where the berm is. He is top left. Just wanna be safe but don't wanna get pushed around. Typically shoot from my back porch or beside that little barn.

I have done a lot of shooting and had neighbors that do a lot of shooting, so I am for being able to shoot at your own house, that being said, I wouldn't be to thrilled if I was him either, especially if he had young kids. From the picture, it looks like you could go a little more to your right.

I would Think thats pretty safe my friends house is a lot closer than that to a farm where they have a small range that they shoot at and the birm isn't even close to what u have. maybe he is afraid that he will be on his back 40 while u r shooting or something. It would be good if u could come to an agreement that you could give him a heads up when your are going to be out shooting so he knows not to be wondering around back there.

Pretty safe is not good enough. He has right to be concerned.

I wouldn't feel good about that if it were me.

Where are the property lines?

I would not feel safe from looking at that diagram. Knowing that my children's lives are dependent ant on 80 yards of timber would not be enough. Can you move it parallel with your house east/west?

I shoot 300 gr 338 Lapua into a 55 gallon barrel of sand. THEY will not penetrate. Add 2 round bells of hay behind it and four 100 dollars you have a UN-beatable berm! I would not shoot 22 rimfires though in you case, But high powder I would not worry about with a good sand trap! thumbup

Safety is #1. You can never be too safe with firearms. I would definitely move that berm so that you can shoot in a safer direction with a good backstop.

Last year at thansgiving, we had a family gathering on our 40 acres...long story short, a cousin was taking pictures by the pond and was hit by a stray bullet in the arm. They said it was a small caliber...most likely .22. Passed all the way through. Never found out where it came from.
