A friend and myself are looking to try to get some turkey hunting in this year. It'll be our first time out. What public land in North Alabama should we look into?

Sounds like you will be among friends on just about any public land in the state.

I guess I'm just curious if there are decent turkey populations on all public lands or if any are off limits or very low populations.

All public land such as WMAs and Forever Wild state land is OFF limits during the turkey season.

Most birds in the state is skyline. Don't let anyone lie and tell you different. Notice that one wasn't named. Gotta watch them turkey hunters.

You must not have heard of the black dick disease that ruined the turkeys on most all the wmas in the state. From what I hear, it pretty much killed out all the birds everywhere cept for bankhead.

Bankhead on the NW side of the state and Choccolocca on the NE side. Haven't hunted the others as much. As far as a call goes; choose the one you are most comfortable with and use it very little.

Bankhead does have turkeys, however they will make a young man old very quick. They like to play the gobble on this mountain and fly to the other game. I suggest traveling south to some flatter ground.

lol Probably not a more honest statement here.
I haven't hunted there in several years but I know a few people that still hunt there.

I've always heard that those Bankhead turkeys were transplanted from Michigan just like the deer and they are a lot bigger and heavier and they gobble a lot harder than these puny southern birds. Sure wish I lived a little closer to Bankhead

I can tell you haven't hunted them, those birds don't gobble worth a damn. Seem to be about 1 good day a week. Its up to you to be there.

I forgot you hunt everyday anyway.

Lemme know which day they gobble and I'll try to lay out of work that day then. You can pm it to me if you need to grin
