shot thread, how many have missed birds at these distances? I guess you know what I'm driving at.

I don't think that I have missed a bird because it was too far. I've missed a handful that were too close and some I've missed for reasons that are unknown to me, but it wasn't because it was too far.

I see what you're getting at, and it's a good point to be made to hunters who don't take the time to pattern their guns. If you spend some time patterning and know the limitations of your gun, these longer shots can be very lethal and reliable with modern equipment.

I've talked to several people this year coming out of the mtns that told me they had missed. I talked to one guy shooting a 3.5
12 ga that said he had missed 4. I wonder how many of these birds end up dying later. I'm sure it's rarely a clean miss. I would imagine many pellets end up in the body. I killed a bird on Skyline years ago that had 7 copper plated pellets embedded in his legs.

I missed a couple with my SBE2 (Texas & Bama) but this was before I understood the importance of the right shell/choke combo and patterning. I had 2 gobs pop out one morning and wouldn't budge. Thought they were 45-50 range and missed. Stepped it off and they were over 65 steps.

Let's go with a long shot here. Heck, I missed one at 9 yards. I could already see his head explode before I pulled the trigger.

If you truly miss a bird at a long distance you are an awful shot..... Heck, I'd think most guns at 65+ yards are throwing 4' patterns or more.

I'm way more prone to miss one close. I rarely take a shot over 45 or so. I have but would rather not.

Long shots are rarely a miss - nearly impossible with a 4-6' pattern. Long shots where they run or fly away are cripples and calling them a miss is used to make the shooter feel better about wounding a bird.

It is easy to truly miss at close ranges!

My most painful miss was at 20 steps; had called in 2 gobblers, all the way across a 40 acre pasture, right in front of my jake decoy & pull the trigger on my old Mossberg 835 and it went *CLICK* and that was the end of that hunt... The firing pin hit the primer, but the shell didn't fire.

Still sore about that "miss". The strutter was a dang nice bird.
