Carpenter ants aren't as bad as termites in that they don't actually eat the wood they just nest in it. Get rid of the moisture problem and go to the do it yourself pest control website and order whatever they recommend to kill them. I ordered some stuff to kill carpenter bees and it killed them dead overnight. They were easy to deal with.

They chew it up to nest in it but don't feed on it like termites. They do damage but not on the level of a termite infestation.

Mix Borax with honey and let them eat, they will be dead in a week.

Usually there's a limb touching the roof of the house and that's how they get in. We don't see them that much, but that's been the case on every one I've ever been to

Amdro will kill them. Our neighbors had an oak close to our old house that ended up having a big nest of them in it. I poured Amdro that I bought to kill fire ants with around the tree and never saw them again.

Treat with something that has cypermethrin in it (such as Demon, etc). Its the best stuff for carpenter ants (Termidor would work too) and pretty much everything with 6-8 legs.

If you have any water oaks near your house, I'd look at getting rid of them, too. Every one of them of any size I've seen cut down was rotten in the middle and infested with carpenter ants.
