First trip to Illinois was a success! Outdoorobsession and I both drew tags for the 5th season. He wasn't able to make the trip, but I was able to come up with my family and scout out the new lease. Monday morning my dad and I set up on one of the narrow fields on the lease. We figured we could start there and work our way back west and scout as we listened for turkeys. Within 20 seconds of being parked we had a bachelor group of 4 bucks come out in the field and 2-3 does/fawns. We watched them feed in the neighbors clover field for 15-20 mins and started scouting out the area. The property is about 50/50 timber/ag fields. All of the ag fields had been tilled and planted in corn within the last few days so we figured we would catch some turkeys strutting in the fields. We were right. Saw 2 hens and 2 long beards across one of the larger fields. We decided to scout another piece of the property and get in at daylight the next morning and hunt the area where we spotted them. We decided to set up my b-mobile decoy and a hen and just call and wait them out. We didn't hear a single gobble but about 6:30 I heard some drumming to my right and he was on his way toward the decoys. He didn't sprint in but he would strut for a few steps then speed walk a few steps until he got right on top of the decoys. I had to wait for his head to get behind the decoys fan before I could get my gun up then I let the #5s fly. 3 year old bird almost 1" spurs and about 10" beard. Was a great trip. Lot of wildlife and property looks great. Ready for deer season!
