I am looking to get a gun purely for coyotes. I won't be shooting deer with it so that doesn't need to be considered. What is the best all around coyote caliber, for shots out to 300 yards?

I hand load as well if that changes anything.

I know squat about coyote hunting, but I'll 2nd the 22-250.

No further than 300 yards, I'd go with 223. Lots more ammo choices.

EDIT: I didn't read that you handload until after I posted. 223 or 22-250 would be fine. What rifle are you looking at?

Nothing really high end. I may go with another ruger American. I have one in .308 and I really like it.

Right now I wouldn't consider myself a skilled enough shooter to make shots out to 4-500 yards, but if I wanted to eventually work out to that range, would 22-250 get me there?

223 for under 300 yards, you could get a AR style with 16"HB and cover 300 yards easily with rapid fire if needed. 22-250 is too loud for varmint hunting and uses almost twice the amount of powder the 223 has and does not do any better in the 300 yard range.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

243 87gr v-max- great long range low recoil set up.
500yards is no problem beyond that 105 amax -nice 7-800 yard target/coyote killer.

115 bergers are even better! you can get 3000 fps plus out of 243 with them, and rock them out to 1000 yards no problem!

22-250. I've shot predators and pigs at 400-500 no problem. Remington 700 vtr in that caliber is a nasty little gun. Or you could build an AR in .223, 6.5creedmor/Grendel or 6.8spc2.

Its will still work at 300 yards. Plus its more vesitale than 223 . And who cares if a 22-250 is louder than a 223 anyway????

Shooters, no doubt it will work, 2/3's more powder and if shots are within 300 yards 223 will be favored to me because I can reload 259 223's with a pound vs 175 of the 22-250, so thats another 84 rounds per pound, that's my point. He doe's state he hand loads, so it would be to his advantage.

Is wind going to factor much into the equation? If wind will be a major factor I like the 243. Heavier wind buckers, yes, a little more powder, but, one shot kills when windy is less powder than 2 or three rounds with 223. Now don't get me wrong, nothing against the 223, I shoot a Ruger bolt 77 target/varmit, but I really like the wind bucking qualities of the 243 when yardage gets long.

I ended up going with the 243. I think it's more versatile and will shoot as far as I will ever want to. Been working up some v max loads but haven't got to test them out yet.
