I'm typing this after a long drive late today so cut me some slack if I ramble on. Here's my results on my farm. 1. I start by disking or working my ground in feburary so by May when I finish it for planting clods break on up on final seed bed prep pass 2. May 1-15 I'll find my window for planting according to the weather. I plant pioneer 2089YHR or Dekalb 6519 hybrids. They're tall and drought hardy. Both are RR and BT for late ear worm protection. I broadcast my seed based on my eye test. I spread on the thinner side as these varities have good ear flex if room to grow. Usually I'll try to plant one bag of seed to 3.5 acres. There's 80,000 seed per bag. Also I'll put down my required dry fertilizer at this time but my soil hasn't called for any in 2 yrs. 3. I cover my seed with my disk about 2-3" deep. Then I cultipack to form the ground and roll air pockets out. This is critical with corn. 4. When my corn is hand high I spray 2 qts of atrazine plus 1 qt of roundup per acre over the top. The corn is generally 4 weeks old at this point. I then give the corn a shot of urea over the top with a buggy at 200 lbs or 92 units per acre. After all this is just deer plot planting.

I said I topdress with 200lbs of urea coated with Nfixx that slows denitrification. Did you see where I said I put that on at 5-6 leaf? I don't require a lot of p and k because I'm not removing stalks and grain. I turn it back under after the season.

Yes atrazine needs an RUP # to buy. And BT is a gene inserted into corn that repels certain worms from eating it. If non BT corn is planted late like this it's a sitting duck for armyworm ear worms and stalk borers.

I've never bought any Atrazine, but I do have a RUP #. Aren't "they" pretty strict on the application and storage of it? I've heard people talk about getting checked pretty frequently if they bought Atrazine. They might have been blowing though.

No. Atrazine is really mild. Just gotta store it more than 50' from an open water source I.e. Wells, creeks, ditches that kinda stuff. People make up stories a lot. The state randomly checks records just have them in order. My big row crop guys get checked a lot but they're buying 1000's of gals. A guy buying plot or small farm quantities typically gets left alone.

What's the smallest acreage that you'd recommend planting?
83% of all statistics are made up.

Probly 3 acre minimum. Just remember corn needs sunlight. It's a very photosynthesis heavy plant. If it's the wrong 3 acres it will fail.
