Never tried clapping but killed several throwing rocks off in the thick draws in recent cutovers. At the time I would buy the Kimberly Clark permit & hunt there recent cut overs. It was fun because I was shooting an sks, took all 10 rounds on one but I never let one get away that I chose to shoot.

I'm going to try it and I'm going to report back. I have a 30 cal ar I just built that would be excellent for this purpose.

Walking clear cuts is my favorite way to hunt. You can do it solo but it works better to hunt with a partner. One guy get on a high spot where he can see well and the other guy slip through the draws making as little noise as possible. 95% of the time the bucks will be bedded in draws, and on really cold days on the East side of draws so the morning sun can hit them.
I have been involved in killing a whole lot of bucks walking clear cuts and young pine plantations. Only thing is you better be able to shoot if you are gonna hunt this way.

Talking about deer that will lay there and let you walk by, an old man I grew up around used to always say "when you come to a particularly thick spot, stop and stare at it." If that deer thinks you see him, he will likely make a move. If he doesn't think you see him, that's when he'll let you walk on by. I don't remember if it's ever worked for me, but the premise makes sense.
My issue with making noise is that I don't want the deer to get up too far ahead of me (unless there are standers and I'm just a pusher).

Little story.
Buddy of mine and myself were riding through one of our clear cuts when we were about 16-17 and I'm looking out the window. All of a sudden I see one eye, one ear, and half of a rack in the thicket. I tell him, he calls bs, so he stops and backs up. I'm pointing at the deer and he finally sees it (maybe 15 yards), it didn't run until we opened the door. Looked like a freak rack deer with points everywhere. My brother ended up killing the deer during season, it was a messed up 10 point. They will let you go right by them. On a side note, I've had deer "drop" at the sound of a shot in a clear cut and lay there. It's happend twice to me and I know for a fact the deer wasn't hit.
