Ran across this while researching my ancestry. Phillip Meroney is my 7th Great Grandfather Timeline: 1781, June 25: Frederick County, Maryland; Muster Roll of Frederick Troops: Captain John Ross Key (Father of Francis Scott Key), Phillip Meroney, Cornet (equivalent to today's 2nd LT). John R. Key's plantation was Terra Rubra (Red Land)near Pipe Creek, then in Frederick County, Maryland-now Carroll county, western Maryland.

My grandfather was one of the founders of Hi Records in Memphis (Al Green probably being one of their most notable singers). He also wrote a song that The Beatles later recorded. It was not one of their "hits" but cool nonetheless.
going further back, our family has been traced back to William the Conqueror (The Norman Conquest of England), although, when you're going back 1000 years, I'm sure a LOT of people could be traced to him, so probably not all that uncommon.

I have and Aunt and Uncle that have covered most all of the groundwork which is interesting.
Jane Monroe Chancellor was the only paternal aunt of Pres. James Monroe so when you visit Ashlawn Highland (Monroe's home near Monticello) and tell them Jane Monroe Chancellor is your what, 8th great grandmother, or whatever she is they will hand you a several page genealogy report. James Monroe also had a law office in Fredericksburg and I think the home he grew up in is still there though we didn't have time to see it.

My dad has done years of extensive research and traveled all over the U.S. tracing our family tree. most interesting = Related to Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Boone, and some guy who signed the Constitution. (His name slips my mind)

Descendent of Anthony Verdel, he served under General Lafayette in the Revolutionary War. After the war he was awarded 5,000 acres in GA for his service to the new nation. Casper Branner of Virginia , he and his sons fought in the Revolutionary War. One of his descendents and my very distant cousin John Casper Branner was the second president of Stanford University. Prolly several horse thieves on those branches too. Ya'll know we're going to find someone we're related to on here!

Candler, the Coke guy. He didn't even leave me a bottle cap. Pat Dye And a grandfather that disappeared from the face of the earth along with all of his records. I think he lived around Hagler in Bibb County, but it may have been around Duncanville in Tuscaloosa County. Joe Boyd.

One of the easiest ways to find your recent ancestors for the uninitiated like me is "Find a Grave" for your county. It has pictures of the headstones and relatives listed with links to their graves. It also has a search option to show all graveyards with your surname. I know a guy who does this for past time. He's one of the people who documents the grave yards and post pictures of the head stones.

I think my dad is pretty interesting. Sniper at LZ X-Ray in Ia Drang Valley in '65, the "We Were Soldiers" battle. Generation before him were all liquor makers in Virginia. They made apple brandy rather than white liquor. Generation before that had a preacher in the mix somewhere. Dad did a little reading on the Campbells and I think they were bad dudes in Scotland. Cut your throat while you're sleeping or stuff like that. On my mom's side, her mother was a Cooley as in Cooley Cemetery near Guntersville. Half of Marshall County kin to the Cooleys. Some of the Cooleys were in Civil War.
