I'd like to just hit a target that far. That's the point I have always made about this subject. I'd be just as impressed if you hit a metal gong at 1000 yards as I would be if you hit a deer. I hunt some of the most pressured and skittish deer on the planet. But from 1000 yards away I couldn't spook them if I were sitting in my truck flashing the headlights and honking the horn. If you are shooting game animals at 1000 yards then you may be a fine shot but as a hunter you f#####g suck. And you can bet your ass that these shows on TV are heavily edited. You will never see the shots that blow off an animals rear leg from 750 to 1000 yards.

200 yds is a long shot. Anyone that says there's not more deer lost/wounded with a 700 yd shot is simply wrong in my opinion. There are things like wind and animal movement that simply can't be controlled or quantified. There probably are more deer wounded at closer range but it's a misleading statistic. Why? Because 100's of thousands more deer are shot at from close range. If an equal number of deer where shot at from 700 plus yards as there are deer shot at under 400 yards then yeah there would be waaay more lost at those long ranges.

I like to let em get as close as possible before the shot. That's the thrill for me.I have shot many as close as 5 yards.I really don't see where I would enjoy taking long shots on any kind of game animal.I guess that is the primeval hunter in me.To each his own.

How many animals are wounded and lost ( no recovered ) shooting at 300 plus yards? pure numbers wise a heck of a lot less than are wounded and lost under 150..... percentage wise I'd bet it is still less, most longrange shooters are better shots than the Joe Average deer hunter who checks to see IF his gun is still sighted in every fourth year..... To say someone sucks at hunting because they enjoy the challenge of long range shooting/hunting is just stupid in my opinion. Im sure they shoot deer with a bow as well. Mostly anyone can kill a deer at 100 with a gun. Heck out west ive seen people shooting deer with a bow at 100yards.

It's about the challenge. When I am bowhunting (compound or recurve) I want them as close as I can possibly get them. When I am hunting with a handgun I want them as close as I can get them. When I am hunting with a rifle I want them as close as I can get them. However, when I have a rifle in my hands I want a weapon that I know exactly where my bullet will go when the trigger is tripped at whatever range the deer, coyote, etc may be. The challenge with the rifle for me changes from seeing how close I can get to how proficient I am at delivering an accurate round to the target. I used to only bowhunt and that was entertaining (and still is), but I enjoy sending rounds of different calibers down range also!
