I have never seen a redeye over about a pound but this looks like a huge redeye to me. He didn't know anything except it was a bass so he released it but when my buddy showed me the pic today I just thought redeye. It's not the best pic but I figured some of our resident biologists could chime in. It does have some faint lines below the lateral line and appears to have some blue on its tail. I know the dorsal fin being up would probably help but he just snapped a pic and threw it back. This was caught in choccolocco creek where the previous state record was caught. Yall think its a redeye or a really dark spot? By the way, the state record is 3 lb 2 oz.[Linked Image]

dang pretty fish either way.

only way to tell for sure is to do scale counts in several locations. I'm going to guess a spot or hybrid. I caught a redeye in 1975 er so that weighed 3lb 1/2 oz, she had a short look and big belly like one of those big Florida bass.

Redeyes are by far my favorite fish to catch.

It does kind of look like a redeye/spot mix doesn't it. I have never seen a redeye with a black line down the side but I've never seen a 3 lb redeye either

I have caught some up there like that pitching shad. I can run my jet boat all the way to the substation.

Not sure. It seems to have a hint of blue in its face but not much white on the lower fins or bottom of the tail. Lord knows I've never seen a 3lb redeye either.

I dont see a Redeye when i look at the pic, not saying it isnt.
That lateral line seems a little strong, and I dont see any of the light coloring where its supposed to be. Overall appearance looks like a spot, but waaaay greener than a spot.
I've caught quite a few redeyes, even some lately but never one that big. Maybe they look different when they get that big?? Like others say, I would guess a spot/red hybrid. Lots of spots in Chocc creek.

Great fish. Looks like a combo to me. Redeyes usually have light highlights on the dorsal fins (tips). I'd guess that Winston Baker from Alex City would be the acknowledged expert on redeyes.
The March '13 Lake Magazine covers redeyes as well as anything I've ever seen.
--The article in Lake Magazine was done by Kenneth Boone (so were most of the pictures.)--
Also, Winston Baker says the first thing he looks for in a pure redeye are white lined around the edges of the anal, posterior dorsal, and caudal fin. Secondly, he looks for silver white crescent shaped border on the back half of the eyes.

It could be a cross, but I think it's just a beautifully colored spot. The white tips aren't prevalent enough I don't believe.
