I killed a buck yesterday afternoon and I thought I'd share the story with y'all... This buck was one of the first decent bucks I got on camera back in August. We had an acre of cow peas planted about 100 yards from this camera, so those peas were pulling a lot of deer into this area (near the center of our farm)...The buck was a long way away from the camera in this first picture, but still looked pretty good to me: I only got a few random pictures of him on this camera from the end of August til November. We have a large foodplot on the west side of our property where we also planted peas this Summer. I put another camera at the far end of this field (called the "Beaver Dam Field") in the middle of September when we planted our Fall plots...We used to bow hunt the Beaver Dam Field a lot, but we decided to stay out of there this bow season. This field is in a low bottom along a creek and it's next to impossible to not spook deer while bow hunting (don't ask me how I know!), so Dad and I decided to save the field for gun season. Fast forward to this past Friday: I went to the Beaver Dam Field on Friday afternoon, hoping to kill a buck with my muzzleloader. I saw a bunch of does and fawns, then at 5:20, 4 deer entered the far end of the field (180 yards from me). I could tell two of them had decent racks, but it was WAY too dark to shoot and way out of muzzleloader range for me...Saturday morning, I hunted about 400 yards from the Beaver Dam Field, so I swung by there about 11:00 to check that camera. It hadn't been checked since I put it out in September. The buck pictured above and two other decent 8 points were using this field a lot, but of course, it was mostly at night. Saturday afternoon, I took "old faithful", my Remington 700 .243 that I've hunted with since I was 10 years old (20 years) to the Beaver Dam Field...Two fawns came out early, then a doe and fawn joined them about 4:15. These 4 deer fed into the woods about 4:25 and I was scratching my head about it. Five minutes later, I see a deer standing at the wood line at the far end and before I could raise my binoculars another deer stepped into view beside it. It was a 4 point and the smaller 8 point (in the second picture above). Within a few seconds, a 7 point joined them and they all began grazing in the field. A few seconds later, they all raised their heads and the bigger 8 point came walking into the field. I slowly got ready to take a shot, but had to wait forever for the buck to turn broadside. Once he got broadside, I squeezed off a shot and the buck mule-kicked. He ran 30 yards to the left corner of the field and stopped, so I shot again. He dropped after that shot! It turned out that I hit him in the shoulder both times! I don't have a clue how he even wiggled after the first shot! He's a good, solid 3 year old buck that weighed in at 160 lbs...He's the best buck I've killed in a long time and I'm still on "Cloud 9" even today! Yes, this is in Winston County. And, NO, I don't know Timber2, nor am I affiliated with him!!!

I would rather be tried by 12, than carried by 6.
