Any tips? No boat and I've never done it before.

Take him on a trip to Arkansas or Mississippi, or find someone local to go with. Then if he likes it he can spend a lot of money on all the gear he will need. It ain't cheap and it causes headaches, but it is like crack in that you can't get enough. Agreed. Do it right the first time...and it will consume all your time and money.

You can do it on the cheap, no more than deer hunting. Kids and I go to a cpl WMAs to hunt. hike/wade in or kayak in. 12-18 decoys each, pump guns, good chokes and shells, and waders. Cpl calls. And we have a ton of fun.
No, it is not huge sun shadowing flights, a limit every time, big boat/blind, etc. But we always have a great time and continue to rehash dunkings and great shots and beautiful ducks.
No, we are not big time duck hunters, buck fun for the buck, we get our fare share and then some!
