Yes and yes.
I saw MUCH more sign in the pines last week than I did in the hardwoods. Unless you still have acorns on the ground, there is really no reason for a deer to be in the open hardwoods. Give me transition edges, thickets, cutovers, etc right now over wide open hardwoods.

There is NOTHING that will ever take the place of time spent in the woods. Go when you can.
Check the thread yesterday about a buck being shot on a greenfield at 11:30. Sitting mid-day on a greenfield is not my cup of tea, but while I was eating lunch, some lucky guy was killing a nice buck.
Good luck!

You talking about big huge open pines, or shorter thick pines? This is an indirect answser, but I want to be where I can see/cover the absolute most ground. I love those big open pines with sage/briars/privet scattered underneath, where you can shoot really far. Especially when the bucks are up roaming!

Hunt the edges. Hunt the edges %^^^^^^ this Missed a very nice buck at 11:25. Heard something crash and then he appeared 2 minutes later. He was about 10 yards inside the thicket where the edge of the pines meet the thicket. 1 little hole and I missed. He slowly trotted off . Clear miss though. Anyone think her will come back through there? Should I move down some towards the direction he came from??

I actually had two bucks come in through a long think pine wood area this weekend. Both caught me off guard also. Now I know where to be looking
