I know there should be a thread on here already about things to know when starting to bow hunt for the first time. Can someone post up a link I can be reading up on before I start asking stupid newbie questions. I tried the search but I guess I was searching the wrong keywords.

I'm a leftie btw, if it makes a difference. I figured it would in price lol. And been rifle hunting for 5 years. And already have a summit stand and harness. But that's it no other gear purchased yet for bow hunting.

Thanks guys

Ok I just read some stuff on here about being measured for my draw. So would it be the best idea to go to a local shop and let them set me up on some gear. I just don't want to be price gouged at a retail store because I'm new to bow hunting. I don't want to throw a grand on a bow and turn out I don't like it as much as rifle hunting. You guys recommend a good honest local shop that won't over sell me on stuff. I live around the Birmingham area.

Thanks again

Grabows I've heard good things about. It's around Birmingham archery unlimited in Prattville I've had a few dealings with, always a good experience. Stay away from the box stores. You can get a good used bow for a few hundred,a mid level entry bow for around 500 or so, and go up from there.

Go get them to measure your draw length. Buy a second hand bow for your first one. Then you will have a better idea what you like. You can get a rigged bow for $250-$300 second hand. Make sure the draw length is right for you tho.

Thanks perch. That sound great. Just what I was looking for. I want to spend enough to have a decent set up but didn't want to break the bank on my first bow season.

Thanks for the heads up. I will probably check out Grabows. I'm thinking now my problem will be trying to find a second hand "leftie bow"

Rim Country Guns has a few new left handed bows at some great price. He's getting out of archery and it's a steal. You would have to call and see what's available. Business is legit, 2 of us here have ordered and received our bows.

Your best bet is probably to let a good shop set you up. However there are great deals to be had on archerytalk. However, I would only purchase from someone with a lot of good feedback. And only pay with PayPal, NOT gift.
You can have someone measure your wingspan and divide that number by 2.5. That will get you close to your draw length. You may want to buy a bow with a lot of adjustability on draw length as well as draw weight. Be sure and research a bow you are interested in.

Last time I was in Archery unlimited they had some left handed bows ( used). Being left handed shooter myself it is hard to find new bows.

I have done very well watching Craigslist for bows. Once you know your measurements, you can steal them from time to time.

That said, a shop might be your best bet getting started. Good luck and have fun!

Just starting paying for my first bow in 12 years from Grabow. James is awesome and will set you up and not try to sale you on a high priced bow. I went with the Hoyt Klash after I shot it was blown away at how much bows have changed in 12 years. Give them a try. I get everything I need from them just for their awesome customer service and they a straight forward with you on everything

All great points guys. Thanks again. I'm taking screen shots of all yalls post. Just in case my thread gets lost in the deep abyss of Aldeer search engine lol.

Hopefully work will allow me a little time this week and I want to atleast check out Grabow. Maybe get some different prices from them and then check out Archery talk for some used lefties. I might end up going new. I have yet meet someone that bow hunted and didn't like it. Matter of fact almost all of them have told me once I kill one with a bow, I will never even look at my rifle again. I believe I'm going to love it. I already love being in a tree stand.

And plus I was talking to the wife last night and she said if I started bow hunting then to go ahead and buy her one too because she always wanted to learn. She a turkey slayer btw. She never really been interested in deer hunting with a rifle. She said it's not fair game because you can kill a deer hundreds of yards away with a rifle. At least with a bow it's more challenging. I know, you don't have to tell me. I have one hell of a awesome wife.

Bow hunting is a whole different ball game. And yes it is very addictive. Good luck on getting everything set and on the season. Marks Outdoors and Nichols Outfitters are two more shops in your area. Some folks bad mouth Marks but I've had good luck with them as well as Nichols.
