Do stocked fish breath differently? No, The Blue Herring mentioned were put in the lake by fishermen. It will result in schooling bass and bigger bass in the lake. as long as I've been fishing there I can tell you that you never see schools of baitfish like other fertile lakes. The Blue Herring will change the lake for the better. I've seen what they've done on Clarks Hill and what they did on Lanier.

Another loony sports writer. and if you read the article, Chris Greene, assistant fisheries chief for the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries explains the issue. Not a loony sports writer.

It's been going on for about the past month. I was down there last weekend playing and while standing about waist deep felt the water temp change 5-10 times over about 30 min. Cold then warm, etc. Fish can't find a comfortable zone to stay in.

The water temperature at Martin is relatively cool compared to Augusts in the past. 87 or so, getting up to 90 later in the day. (Surface) As for the bluebacks, I hope these condtions wipe them out. They feed heavily on eggs and fry and it's not clear whether they add a significant weight gain to stripers, spots, or largemouth. The bluebacks will have a negative effect on crappies, bluegill, and shellcracker just by adding another predator to their environment.

I'm sure our Freshwater Fisheries can make it alright. No problems here. Just put in another non-native species.

Stripers are cold water fish and need cold oxygenated water to survive. Smaller stripers can handle higher temps better than larger ones. When the big ones stay in water over about 80 or so degrees, they quit eating and die. All the rain means they have had the dam running nonstop and there is so much water rushing through that all the water in the lake is pretty much the same temp. Normally in the summer the lakes are pretty still and they stratify, basically making cool layers in the lake where stripers can live. This is why smith and Martin have bigger stripers as a rule than say Logan Martin. The deeper waters give the larger fish summer refuge. Martin just has very little summer refuge right now.

I don't know what killed them but last weekend when I was on the lake there were dead stripers floating everywhere near chimney rock and the damn. Stripe are not native to lake Martin because they can't get past the damns to get up river. They were introduced in the 80's.

STRIPERS ARE NATIVE TO EVERY RIVER IN ALABAMA THAT TOUCHES THE GULF. Thanks. You said that before. They weren't native to lakes when they backed them up. A completely different enviroment than rivers. BTW, glad this is the last time.
