I'm reading the book "A Walk in the Woods" right now and it's a great read, full of humor, interesting history, and observations about the trail.

I don't know if I could sleep on the ground for that many days or walk 2000+ miles with a pack. It certainly sounds like an adventure though.

I didn't realize that the trail was first commissioned in the 1930's but the first guy to actually "Thru hike" is was a WWII veteran in 1948. I just bought his book on Amazon for further reading.

Definitely thought about it, but I would have to do it piecemeal. Couldn't get off work for that long.

My step dad and I were just discussing this last night. He read a book about a woman who did it when she was 67, then again when she was 69 after she had hiked the Oregon trail. He and mom are going up this week and the book has inspired him to hike an 18 mile segment in the area they will be camping. Seems like it would be something I'd enjoy, but I couldn't take the time necessary to do it non-stop either.

I've got a good friend that goes for a few weeks every year by himself. He seems to like it. Not for me

I'm hoping to retire in about 6 years and Mrs. Irish will probably still have to work for another 4 years.

I'm thinking of stuff I can do to kill time... grin

Ride motorcycle across US...
Build hot rid car...
Hike Appalachian trail...
etc...

Bryson certainly made me think about it. One of the bucket list things I'll never accomplish.

I think even if you weren't in shape to do it, sometime after you started you would quickly get into shape or you would die. grin

My back will no longer allow me to perform such fun activities. Used to backpack the Colorado Rockies every summer when I lived in Texas.

Really sounds fun, but me and heights just don't work. There are quite a few areas on that hike that are a "No-GO" for me grin

Bryson's book talks about the morbidly obsess guy he met on the trail that was making only 5 miles a day. Either get in shape or die seemed to be his mission. But perhaps you aren't at that point of the book yet so I'll quit.

I should have done it when I was young, irresponsible, no commitments.

A friend of mine did it last Spring. There are a few hostels spread out along the way. Very primitive and expect to bunk with some strangers. You'd better be in shape. The first day back he had a cheeseburger and said it seemed like the best thing he had had in his entire life.

I know someone that will be finishing this week. He started in May. My wife and I have talked about doing some weekend trips. I wish I could take off from work long enough to even think about it. I can't see it happening.

I don't really "get it". I mean I like to hike every now and then, just not a thousand miles.

Im gonna do 10-15 miles in each state. Get a taste of it without committing 6 months to it. And gonna sleep and eat somewhere good each night and see my wife, who Im certain has absolutely zero interest in doing it.
Plus I can carry a day pack with a few essentials. I absolutely hate carrying heavy stuff on my back.

Now that sounds like a plan.

I've done some sections of it, but nothing huge. I love backpacking, dad brother and I used to do it a lot. Longest I've been out is 2.5 weeks. Don't think I could ever do the whole thing, but I wish I could!
