Multiple other threads have people discussing the harvesting of does, deer density, and other population topic. These discussion got me thinking about our lease and deer observations to this point ( just this season ). Has anyone ever had the issue with not seeing enough does???? On a typical sit I will see 5-6 deer. The best sit this year yielded 18 one frosty morning. Of those 18; 10 were bucks. Aside from that morning I have only seen 3 does while on stand and an abundance of young bucks along with a few mature ones just out of bow range. We have not done an official survey with cams but it seems we get mostly bucks on camera as well. Maybe Im over reacting but I'm beginning to get a little worried purely in the fawn recruitment category. Any thoughts on what could be causing this lack of sightings?

we did not have the lease last year. It was owned by a family for YEARS and they sold it to the timber company. We picked up the lease in September. Talking with the family who owned it ( they live right down the road ) it sounds like it was not their main hunting area and was really reserved for a few family members around the holidays. They do not come off as " if its brown its down " type folks. I can not speak to their harvest practices however.
If they did wipe the does out they did a good job of leaving the yearling bucks.... they are everywhere.

One thing I have noticed is that we have a serious Yote problem... Every camera I put up gets at least one coyote on it. I wish I lived close enough/ had the time to do a great job of trapping. But the yote problem does not really explain why the buck to doe sightings are scewed.

I am having a similar problem with fawns. In years past I would be disappointed if a doe didn't have twins now I'm just glad to see one with a fawn on my place. I know Coyote's are the main problem because I've got several pictures of them carrying dead fawns on trail cams. So just imagine how many they really got. Ive also seen and killed more this year then my entire hunting career 7. We have declared all about war on them. Sounds like you need to do the same thing.

@ lefthorn I do not envy you in that regards. I hunted the a lease for the last 12 years with a good population and dynamics as far as I was concerned. So maybe I am a little spoiled when I can't go watch a few does pretty much any evening on fields. @ DAX we haven't been lucky enough to see many of the suckers this year. I let one get away from me during bow season. My brother did get one with his bow.... Then sent me a text to ask if he should shoot one in one of our plots yesterday afternoon!!! I quickly informed him that is not a question that should ever come up!

one of the problem i see at the moment is that everybody talks about/wants predator control but doesn't want to accommodate it. For as much as folks complain about it, i have found it next to impossible to find places to set. Yep I am one off those people but that has changed this year.

My only possible explanation would be that does are almost always in groups led by an old doe. An old doe is smarter than a young buck so I would ask if the bucks you are seeing are younger ones or older ones? This is common on the land I hunt during the rut. By that time of the year, an old doe is the hardest deer to kill there is, especially when I was almost exclusively bowhunting.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I don't know why anyone would be against letting someone trap on there hunting property/lease if they wasn't doing it there self. I know I would.

I have seen more bucks than does the last 5 years or so. And I don't shoot does. I'm 100% convinced that as many or more does are being killed in this state than bucks. And that is horrible for the deer herd. More does than bucks have been being killed for that last 10 years. That is a fact the hunter surveys and GC both agree on that.
If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.

4 years ago I could count 20-25 doe's between two fields 1/4 mile apart and 3 years unto now I do good to see 6 doe's on the whole property
When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself The older I get the better I used to be
