It was a cold one the other day. We sheared a pin while coming across the lake and had to paddle the last 150 yards or so. When we got to dry land we decided to just go ahead and set up even though wind wasn't ideal right there. Threw the decoys out, set up the blind and waited. We would deal with a broken down boat after the sun came up. Saw lots of birds but had a hard time working them with the wind against us. Pulled down 3 Gadwall and a mystery duck. (would have been many more if I could shoot worth a damn) At first I thought blue bill but wasn't sure so I sent a picture to a buddy of mine who immediately called me (almost out of breath) to ask if this was a joke and tell me I had no idea what I had. I am so stoked. Three years of duck hunting and I finally knock down a bird worth mounting!

First of all, I have never seen an episode of Duck Dynasty... I had a beard when that show came out and shaved it after the 10th person asked if I was a fan because I had a beard.. But yea, looking back on that day the blue bill thing is a bit embarrassing.. I have just only ever knocked down Gadwall, Teal, and Woodies. Those first two seasons saw maybe 20 dead ducks.. I am learning by the seat of my pants and the kind people on this forum.

Heck don't sweat it, my 2nd season back in the early 80's we didn't know what a hoodie was. My buddy had it mounted cause it had a cool mohawk. It takes some years to learn what to look for in flight etc... They're all different in certain ways which is what makes water fowling pretty cool if you ask me.

Cool wigeon that will make a great mount! If you want to learn more about duck ID, I would recommend the LeMaster method book. It will let you identify any duck you bring to hand. The Arkansas Game & Fish department used to print a pamphlet on duck ID. You may be able to find it online. Not being able to ID ducks can get very expensive if you shoot one too many of the wrong duck.

Luckily I have never shot enough of anything to have to worry about that. I appreciate the info, I will look into that! When we shoot a duck we aren't sure of, we usually immediately look it up or send a pic to someone we know will know. We try and be safe. Teal season was stressful but they are pretty easy to ID long before they are in range.
