So we planted the plots at the lease and they came up except one. The one that failed was planted separately with different seed. I had run out and ran to tractor supply and got a blend of clover rather then the 3 way we had used elsewhere.

We have a few bits of scraggly green popping up now a month later.

Can I just top dress by hand some wheat or rye or some such without using equipment? I don't want to damage what little clover we got.

Thanks. And I don't think I will get seed at TSC again.

Did you disc or T&M? T&M is slow to emerge. I’m just now seeing emergence on plots planted a month ago. Drilled plots planted same day are 6-8” tall

Clover is slow to get going, might be spring before it really takes off but you can overseed with wheat, rye or oats and it will be ok as long as birds don't eat it before it germinates

I disced it.

Thanks for the replies. I will hand spread some rye and oats, and hope the birds leave me a little.

Correct I disced then spread seed and ran over it with a smooth roller. Looked nice a
When done but still crappy growth.

could the seed got covered to much by chance . planting such small seeds on a freshly disced plot , there would be a lot of deep cracks and gullies the seed could have fallen into ,then cultipacking or rolling it over might have put to much dirt over it....I disc then smooth out the plot flat before spreading clover or brassica seeds . just a thought.

Sounds like DonH is right. With small seeds it's best not to cover. I usually cover oats then broadcast brassicas and clover. The soil is soft. I've always had great plots like this. I'd suggest you spread some brassicas, birds eat most large seeds. Small seeds don't have enough energy to travel far when covered too deep. Good Luck

There was no we in planting that one. Lol just take your land manager or food plot engineers advice and get a sack of rye and put on it. It will be fine. Then I’ll go kill a buck off of it for you haha

If clover gets over 1/4" deep, it won't germinate. You should have rolled it after you disced, the sewed the seed. Also, perennial clovers spend the majority of the fall and winter putting their growth below ground in the root system and explode above ground in spring.
