I hate to be the safety police, but I dang near lost my right eye tonight on my walk out.
I was hunting way back on a piece of public that took me through a cutover that was probably 2-3 years old, long enough for the bark to peel off the pine limbs that had been left behind after the cut. Well, it had been misting all afternoon and flat out raining for about the last hour so everything was nice and soaked, including me. I was about 1.5 miles back and was ready to get the heck out so I was probably not taking my time and being careless. It was also pitch black and I was using a headlamp. If you've walked enough cutovers, you know where this is going...
I slipped on a pine branch that had no bark on it that was oriented downhill. It was slicker than goose sh*t. On the way down, an old sapling was about 3' tall and 2" around hit me right above my right eye, hitting my eyebrow. I full on head butted it! An inch lower and I'd have lost my eye for sure. When I realized what happened I felt my right eye with my hand and in disbelief it was still there and I could see. I said a quick prayer and then realized how careless I'd been.
So, it's getting about that time during deer season where we get tired, comfortable with our climbing routines, and just flat out complacent and start making stupid mistakes. Don't wind up as a statistic!
As we used to say in the Corps, complacency "crushes and kills."
Stay frosty guys!

Always wear a safety harness while climbing or in a stand. Even if you think you don't need it.
83% of all statistics are made up.
