This story got me to thinking...What's on your hit list???

https://www.thestate.com/news/local/environment/article228326574.html

Animals I swerve to HIT
Possums
Coons
Snakes
Armadillos

Animals I swerve to MISS
Cats
Dogs
Deer
Turtles (My dad got a flat from running over one)

Animals I try not to hit but won't swerve to hit or miss:
Squirrels
Rabbits

I know a girl that totaled her car swerving to miss a rabbit. She said it was worth it. I said I would never endanger my life or others' lives to miss an animal in the road.

This one ought to be interesting.

I'm not swerving. More people end up tearing their cars up our hurting themselves or others from swerving than if they'd just kept a steady course

Pretty short list......swerve to miss people or another vehicle. I imagine more people have wrecks swerving to miss something that they do just hard braking and staying straight. I know way to many folks who have died or nearly died trying to miss a deer or dog, an animal isn’t worth it.

I don't try to intentionally hit any animal with my vehicle. We are the ones that decided to build our roads through their habitat. That said, I'm not going to swerve to miss them and endanger myself or others.

My oldest grandson and I had this conversation right at dark, yesterday. I'll try not to hit pretty much most things, but I will not wreck a vehicle trying to miss a dog (cat, coon, oppossum, etc.). I've seen a lot of people that wrecked a vehicle to miss Rover, and while they were piled up against a tree and bleeding, Rover happily wagged his tail on down the road in search of his next victim! After the bleeding stops, their insurance company faults them for the wreck and drops them or raises their rates. Wrecking to miss a cow, or horse, or something like that...well, you're between the proverbial rock and hard place, on that one.

A few years ago, I saw cars on a VERY busy road, at rush hour, swerving to miss a duck with a whole bunch of little ones. I ran over some. I hated it but the only time I will think about swerving is if there is no other traffic around.

Depends on my speed, road conditions and size of the critter for me.

Smallish soft critter and raining=RIP
Large critter, dry road and low speeds=do my best to avoid if possible.

Friday afternoon I had a guy in front of me lock up his brakes going 65 down the highway to keep from hitting some little mangy stray dog in his big F250. Almost caused me and the person behind me to rear end him and I had my 7mo in the car. I'm all for missing a dog if you can but if you almost cause other people to have a wreck then you're a jackass in my book.

On another note, I was coming through a neighborhood once and had two squirrels run across the road. Doubled up with one under the left tire and one under the right tire.

I'm with doa, i'll do all I can to miss something LARGE (cow, horse, deer) and will try to safely avoid other animals without wrecking my vehicle. Way back in the day, I was visiting a buddy in the Knoxville area. His gf hooked me up with one of her friends while I was up there and I let her drive my truck to get us back to the dorm (I was not in condition to drive and in an unknown town)...crazy chick flat spotted all four tires for a stinking opossum. smh

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

There was a wreck several years ago that almost killed some people. We actually flew a couple out. The original cause of the wreck was someone slamming on their breaks to miss some geese in a 65 mph zone.

The only living thing I would swerve to avoid hitting is a human..... depending on the human of course.

Learned that when I was 20, almost rolled my 4 runner swerving from hitting a mattress on the interstate. Lost control and ended up hitting the guardrail.

If an animal chooses to commit suicide by running out in front of me then who am I to foul their plan. Most of the time unless you are going slow it's better not to swerve. Now a hog is an exception.

Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

Only for deer and dogs. The rest I just hold steady.

most of the time you don't know which way to swerve, unless its a large object, is better to not swerve, slow down and hope you miss.

I was behind this lady once, that decided to stop here car and move a big ole turtle out the road. I watched as she exited her car walked over and picked up that big ole thing. I then watched, as she turned the turtle to look at it as she was walking towards the edge of the road. Then, it PISSED all over her....I mean ALL over her. Her arms must have been spring loaded, cause when that piss started flying her arms shot that damn turtle like a dart into the ditch grin
