I'm computer illiterate. I have no idea what format c is or how to load windows without connecting to Internet which it won't let me do.

There are several on here that can walk you through it. I will say it was a pain in the arse the time I did it due to a virus. It's the only true way to wipe one that I am aware of. But it wipes clean, I mean the operating system and everything.

Mangler or Fatty should be able to tell you.

On second thought, why not just go and see what a new hard drive would cost? Possibly get more storage, etc than what you have and not have to through the formatting.

1st step. Stop taking computer advice from 3toe. He jumped on the information superhighway with a typewriter.

If it's older than 4 years throw it away. It'll be more trouble than it's worth. I won't work on pc's or laptops that are older than that. By the time you spend the $$ getting the software legal and virus protecting it you could pay $299.99 and get a brand new top of the line pc with apps and everything.

Take the old one and donate it to charity and deduct it from your taxes.

That's honest advice from someone who's been working on pc's since 1991.

Only thing it has the bigger card reader than sd card I think it's a compact. I have several game cams that use them and my pc won't read them but the laptop will. I just won't it to get on the Internet. I can but it had to hook to a phone line and call into the company. Any idea how to disable it and set up my own Internet con.

What operating system is it and do you have the disk? If so you can just boot from the cd, resintall windows and then reinstall the drivers etc. but if it is that old it will definitely be more work than it is worth.

Reinstalling is a real pain for someone not familiar with PCs.

I'd do this:

Go into control panel and uninstall any programs you don't use. be sure they are programs though, like weatherbug, music downloading programs and things YOU have installed, except for virus protection. Don't remove ANYTHING that you don't know what it is.

Restart

Open internet explorer and got to tools menu and 'delete' temporary files and cookies (this may take a while).

Restart

If not working better now - seriously just replace it.

If you have the XP disk, have Larry bring it to work and let one of our 'puter geeks do it. That's what I do.

Call a local computer company in the phone book. Ask for the bottom dollar wipe and reload price. Pay it.

Found a date on it. 1999. Probably trash it. Not gonna buy one. Just thought if I could get it to working i would use it.

DON'T TRASH IT!!! I can put Linux on it and it'll likely work just fine. If nothing else, it'll make a neat gift for some kid that doesn't have a computer.

Give me a holler...
