After my parents have passed I have inherited a lot of good memorable items. There is a mobile home on an acre lot a little way down the road from my late parents place. I now own. I turned the water on and there are numerous leaks. I am thinking I would replace the pvc with pex. I did repair 3 leaks but it seems to be many more. What are y'alls opinion. What do you think it would costed me? BTW the mobile home is nice on the inside.

I did that last April (2018). Had some friends "winterize" it for me and let's just say I think they at least accomplished finishing some beers. But anyway, I had busted galvanized pipe all over. I just started at one end and worked my way replacing it with pex (bought 100ft roll). Worked out really good and I put a couple drains off each of the main lines to make it easier to winterize from now on.

Big thing is buying the cheaper pex fittings (especially if you can borrow the tool). I used shark bites cause they are so easy but that is where the $ goes. Probably cost me $30 for the pex and $120ish in shark bite fittings. Could do it for 1/4 of that if you have the tool and buy the regular pex fittings.

Also I'll add that when winterizing blowing the lines out is a good idea but the main thing is pouring/pumping in antifreeze. If you fill all your drains and lines you'll never have a problem. Plus the new pex should be tougher, but you'll still have fittings that can bust.

Roughly $500 in material and a full day to redo it correctly

I always use copper pipe with solder. I have seen the pex fittings leak.

But if i had a trailer id go with pex. Im in a house on a crawlspace. When i update all my pipes i might use pex. I dont know about the codes but soldering and buyin copper pipe is too much work and money.

That is interesting. I spoke to 2 professional plumbers in the last month and both said they quit using copper cause the lead free solder just couldn't perform as good and that pex was more reliable. I asked him specifically about shark bite fittings and one said he only saw one fail ever and he wasn't sure why it did.

But, Jake is an expert in everything. So, he knows better than all the professional plumbers.

Im not a plummer. My friends house had leaking pex fittings. Ruined his sheet rock. I might swap over to pex when i decide to update my lines.

In Jake's defense. Copper does cost a lot now, maybe those plumbers just know how to save on materials. Though I have tried to solder with the newer stuff and my skills have convinced me to switch to pex.

Pex is easier and cheaper but it has watered down the trade... Id hesitate to call myself a plumber if I struggled soldering.
