Anyone in the body shop biz who knows about getting salvaged vehicles inspected and re titled? GF car got hit and just needs one door replaced. Repair quote was higher than heck and over the % thresh hold so they marked it as totaled. She can surrender the car for $4k, or keep it and get a check for $3200. I can replace the door for $250 and you will never know it had been hit. Car has another 5+ yrs of life left in it easily.
Whats the process of having it inspected and signed off on for re title?

When asked about it the adjuster is giving her a hard time over the "keeping it" option Telling her it has to be repaired by a licensed rebuild shop and then it has to be towed to montgomery, cant be driven until the inspection is done and it title re assigned to salvage and that it could take up to 60 days before she could even drive it again, yada yada.

Bullschit. You can drive it and renew tags for it as long as you own it. The only thing you can't do is sell it until it's inspected. Tell that adjustedr to shut her goober smoocher and give you a damn salvage title!!!!!! I've done it twice. Still got one if them. I renew the tag every year and keep liability insurance for it. Never had it inspected and never had anyone questioning it.

I had mine inspected off Taylor road in Montgomery. They inspected it, affixed a black salvage/ rebuilt sticker, and I had the title within a couple weeks seems like.

If it can be done as outback says they just send her a title that says salvage and she can continue to drive it from now on with no inspection thats the route we will take. I will just replace the only damaged thing which is the door and she can drive it another 5 years or more and by that time it will be almost worthless anyway so it can go to the scrap yard.
I havent laid hands and eyes on the estimate that was written up, but she says it has a fender on it and headlight assembly. new mirror, new door glass, interior door panel and more written up on it. The mirror, door panel , glass, none of that is messed up. No damage at all to fender or front headlight... So dont know why its on there. I have already found a complete door online for $275.

16 years ago when I was in the body shop business. You had to have a rebuilers license to get one inspected and a rebuilt title issued. You could not get a salvage titled vehicle tagged until it was repaired and inspected and a rebuilt title issued. You may could find a shop that would let you run it through them for a fee and have it inspected. All your paper work has to be in order. You have to have receipts for all parts that are replaced.

I've got a 99 Tahoe that was totaled almost ten years ago. I kept it and the insurance company got me a new salvage title. I've been renewing tags for it ever year and keeping liability insurance on it.

When they called to set up an appointment I just scheduled it for my home address(could have been work or body shop where repaired). He called me a couple of hours to confirm car was at that address. took about 15 minutes. If you are the owner and plan to keep the car,you can have if fixed by anyone, does not have to be a certified rebuilder. If someone buys a totaled car, then they have to get it repaired by a certified rebuild shop. If you have any questions PM me and I will give you my number. Must be big money in these cars that are "totaled". They tried to talk me out of mine too but did not give into them.

She called the state today ... they told her once the title is changed to salvage its not supposed to be driven until its repaired and inspected. They told her the car couldnt be insured or buy a tag for it. From the way yall have spoken seems like they just "slip thru" and no one notices it, or flags them in the states system and as long as you dont let the tag or insurance expire it just rocks on.
I told her to go ahead and tell insurance she wanted to keep the vehicle. We will roll the dice and see how it plays out. I can buy a whole same color parts car for $600 and rob the one door needed off fit and sell it or scrap it and be $ ahead.
