Alright small engine gurus...................older Murray riding mower. Has a relatively new battery (last summer) that stays on a maintainer and is fully charged (according to the charger/maintainer), but when I go to crank it, it struggles to even turn over and won't crank. It'll barely turn over a couple of times, then nothing. If I hook jumper cables to it, it fires right up.

This was an issue last year (I posted about it), where I was having to jump start it due to a bad battery, but eventually it wouldn't even start on cables. Once I replaced the battery, it went back to normal. I can't imagine a battery would go bad this quickly, when kept on a maintainer......am I wrong?

Most lawn mower batteries are good for about 1 season......maybe 2. Don't expect them to last 4 or 5 years like a car battery.

Yep, get the biggest lawnmower cranking battery you can find. Probably still have to get a new one every year or two. Or you could rig up a pull start and never worry with a battery or starter

Same with motorcycle batteries. I replace mine every two years. Mower one year, MC battery the next year. This year is the one for the mower.

Sounds like the valves need to be adjusted. Look on Youtube. It's a pretty easy process. Worked for me.

disconnected the battery, cleaned both cables and terminals and put them back on good and tight.........just clicked. guess I'll get the battery tested. got 3 summers out of the one that was in it before, and it was in the mower when I bought it....maybe I just got lucky with that one.

Mine did the same thing. Charger showed good. I replaced battery and it fired right off. I did get 3-4 years out of that one.

Don't blame me for your bad decision-

The battery maintainer could be bad and overcharging the battery. I ruined a small battery with one that never cut off so I started charging them every few weeks for just a few hours or overnight with a different charger and chunked the unit I knew was bad.

It needs mud tires.

Yeah, I agree and that's what I got out of the last one, but this one is only like 9 months old, which is why I was worried it might be something different.

If you can mulch your grass or neighbors once a month to keep it charged throughout the year. Then a charger is not needed.
