I don't really think the MLB saw a lot of backlash from that decision, unfortunately. They didn't. People these days don't care as much about cheating due to a decline of morals and standards.

The year Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa battled for the HR record was fun. It was all a fraud and you had to have your head up your azz not to see it. Yep. Just like we all "pretend" our favorite college football players aren't getting paid, and actually going to class, and interested in school. Average schools like Washington State and Mizzou make $130 million dollars on college pigskin and we're supposed to believe the best player on the field doesn't get $1,000/month in spending' money for weekend. OK. It's still fun to watch. I have first-hand experience that Bama athletes come to class. They send staff to record their attendance. If there are problems, just tell them and “it will be taken care of.”

If there are problems, just tell them and “it will be taken care of.” I can see that. And it's easy to understand why, if a football player is "supposed" to be in class, and they're not folks will raise a stink. But I'm sure the football players at every school are steered to the easiest, and mostly online classes now. It has probably never been easier to game the system.

I think the group of young players in the league currently are the most compelling in my lifetime. I grew up with though the steroid era collecting cards of all the guys who’ve basically remained above the fray. Ripken, Gwynn, Ryan, Griffey, Thomas, Maddux...and the Braves in general. It was like I could sense the chitbirds as a child. I agree that the McGwire-Sosa race was exciting, but I couldn’t stand either of them as players or people. Still don’t like them, and don’t believe either of them would’ve been more than middle of the road players without a prayer of making the Hall without juice. Bonds and A-rod we’re both all time greats and cheaters...more confusing and disappointing than the other turds. I know there are always folks trying to bend rules, and don’t believe for a second that the game is clean now...though it’s definitely clean-er. FYI: If you liked the steroid era because of all the bombs, then you should pay more attention to the current game. There were more HR’s hit each of the last 4 years than any previous year...ever. Last season in particular, there were over 1000 more hit than in MLB history.
