I killed a big 5x5 hunting by myself in the Flattops Wilderness area, Co. When you are alone and walk up on a dead bull it is very intimidating how big they are. Worst thing was it fell out in the open with no tie off trees close enough. I crawled under a hind leg and drug the guts outing opened the chest cavity to cool it down. All this right at dark and my damn horse had run off...three miles from camp. Finally caught the horse and got back to camp in the dark by giving the horse his head....he walked straight to my tent second time on that trail.
Got helpX2 and went back in the morning and quartered the bull and hung it high in an evergreen.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I've been four times and killed two 5X5 bulls, all on my own without a guide. If you are an experienced outdoorsman and have successfully hunted deer and turkey here you are qualified to go kill an elk. OH, and in good physical condition because the DIY land ain't flat.

I've talked with several guides and outfitters on my trips out west. Every one of them says they enjoy hosting hunters from the SE. They will tell you that anyone who hunts the southeastern US successfully and consistently can easily do a western big game hunt with little assistance.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

Packing one of them jokers out ain’t for sissies. Especially after getting both knees cut on a few months prior. 😳

And when one sneaks in on you and you see him up close bowhunting and eye range him at 40 yards or so and let an arrow fly only to see it sail right over his back only to then calm down and get the rangefinder out to learn he was actually 24 yards away it is a pretty sickening feeling. I know guy that did that in Arizona.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
