Picked me up a new Browning Rawhide safe today. I’m picking it up tomorrow and have a question. I’m on a crawl space so we have to come up 6 steps outside and roll across the deck to get inside. The steps are built from 2x6 and the deck of course is 5/4 boards. My plan is to lay 3/4” plywood across the portion of deck we have to cross just as a precaution. Anyone see a problem with the steps holding? They are brand new so not rotten. The safe is 850#.

I don’t think it would be a problem. I’m not an engineer or a contractor. I’d be more worried about the floor joists and weight like that for an extended period of time loaded down. I would say you’re gonna need extra support under that part of your house.

I would not let my guys move it up wood stairs. I am sure it will be fine but wood stairs and heavy things are a recipe for an injury in our industry. Be careful though!

I'd make sure the stringers were cut out of a 2x12 and not the store bought stringers out of a 2x10. Check for knots at the cuts. If your worried, I'd be and I build for a living, you can cut extra stringers and double up...

I forgot to mention that I did put 4x4 brace under the middle stringer and my contractor is going to add addition bracing for safe measures. I’m putting it on the outer wall so it want be in between spans.

I checked and the stringers are made from 2x12’s.

A live load of 850 plus the weight of whatever manpower and equipment to move it would be a concern on the steps depending on the width of the remaining web from the tread cutout and the quantity and quality of stringers. As far as the dead load of it sitting in one place for several years, I would absolutely add cross bracing to the joists under it along the front of the safe. I'm assuming the back of it would already be sitting atop a block foundation under the joists.

Personally I would double up my joists under where it will stay, brace them, and brace the stringers as well. Much cheaper than figuring out after the fact that you should have done all that to begin with

Just a thought. Will the door come off the safe?

Door comes off my browning with two allen screws under the hinge pins. Helps with the weight when moving it.

All these people saying they’d pay someone else to move it don’t get it. Most professional movers probably wouldn’t touch it (like he said above). Or, for another reason, I know most movers are leery of flooring and door thresholds.

I probably went over board, but I cut my subfloor out and formed and poured concrete up to top of subflooring. I set anchor bolts and then moved safe in and bolted down. If someone tried to snatch that safe out, the whole side of the house would go with it.

You may want to look at reinforcing your crawl space
