For a scope, this is the best Alley Sight Align. I frequently get rifles closer bore sightnig than a lot of folks can with live fire. My experience with lasers is they are only good for getting red dots close. If I'm putting a red dot on a gun I can site down the bore on, I use the method R.H. mentioned. It works better than any laser I've ever used.

Never used one so can't comment on effectiveness. Have used a few lasers when I was made to but stopped as soon as whoever made me went out of my sight. Lasers are no good in bright sunlight so there is that.
For Bolt guns I clamp it in a vise where I can see a hundred yards, remove the bolt and look through the barrel from the rear. Then I adjust the scope hairs to where I'm looking. Everything else start at ten yards.

Totally off the subject, but Geno wins the avatar contest hands down. He's definitely got the best one around right now... 3toe had one a while back of a blonde firing a 50 cal from prone. The recoil was fun to watch!
