Bought 40 acres and was gonna spray it before planting pines. Is this something that could be done with my tractor and 50 gallon boom sprayer? It’s hilly terrain but the stumps wer cut very low. If so what poison to use and how many gallons would it take to cover it. There’s really only prob 25-30 acres to spray. The other is a creek bottom with huge hardwood draw about 15-20 yards wide. Trying to get by without paying a helicopter to come spray it if I can.

Is that the same tractor you used to build the pond? If so, I suspect you can do anything you want with it. smile

You need someone who knows more than me to recommend a herbicide, but I think they use Imazapyr as the main one in site prep. But be careful with it around those hardwoods; if it gets into the drip line it will kill them. I lost some to it the last time I had it done, but I hired it out.

I would think that biggest challenge in doing it yourself is going to be figuring out the correct application rate. If you have never put it out on forest land before, and it could take a while to figure out how fast you can go and how much ground you can cover. I think it will be slower than covering a field, but if you have experience with the sprayer you will figure it out soon enough. Good luck with it.

Imazapyr and Ezcort will nuke hell out of it. It's soil and foliage active so be careful and don't get it under the drip-line of anything you don't want to die. You can use Garlon and roundup on the edges to safely cut the perimeter in.

Call your Local NRCS office.
They can give you a recipe for herbicide. And if you are re-planting and they have a program
like Long leaf pine, they may pay you back

If you can traverse the area with your tractor, then sure you can. However, The most difficult issue you will have is regulating the flow to get the right coverage.

You need a tank mix specific for the trees you have growing and it needs to be applied at 10-15 gallons per acre.

Any sprayer setup the right way shouldn’t have trouble keeping constant pressure and coverage.

If you’re thinking of doing it with a tractor then it should be able to be done with a skidder. Hire it out. Anything less than 20 gpa is child’s play. You want 20-30 gpa. 40 oz chopper, 21 oz Garlon XRT, 32 oz surf. If there isn’t a lot of waxy targets you can sub glyphosate for Garlon.

Hollywud in all seriousness that’s not a job I’d tackle with a utility tractor on a Saturday. It can be done, but that don’t mean it would need to be. If you’ve got stumps, tops, skidder ruts, etc to contend with it’s going to beat you to death trying to stay on track and apply your herbicide at the required rate. Also, you need to have a consulting forester decide what to spray depending on what is there now and what you decide to replant. There’s a LOT of forestry and wildlife work I do with my farm equipment but spraying herbicide on a cutover ain’t one of them.

You have to get funded first before you do anything. We can't go back and pay for something already done.
Sign up is everyday with a batching in the fall. Then funding comes the following spring.

If doing it yourself, how does the guarantee work? Seems like it would be hard to get a redo. Idk.
