I had a guy I know tell me his kid was afraid of shooting a high powered rifle because of the loud bang. So he put a plastlic coke bottle over the barrel and tape for a homemade silenced. Just to get his little girl use to shooting. Don't know if he was full of it or it may be dangerous or might really work. I really have no intentions on trying this it seems kinda crazy.

Seems like it would make a louder bang right up close. Kinda of like a baloon popping.

HE should consider a good set of ear muffs for the kid instead of making homemade silencers.

But it will silence the shot so she won't here it. Like a twenty ounce coke bottle

It will not silence the shot, the bang you hear with a rifle is the sonic boom, the only way to make that sound go away is to make the rifle subsonic. What he needs to do is buy some good ear muffs that will cut out the sound.

I dunno...some times when my kid is runnin his mouth I give him a coke and it shuts him up. Maybe it works on rifles too.....LOL

Seriously to silence a weapon you have to trap the rapidly expanding gas and control the release to the enviorment that is what a "supressor" does

However if your friend was shooting a small caliber rifle like a .22, a coke bottle with the bottom cut out would deflect the sound waves away from the shooter. However a piece of platic over the end of a barrel is VERY DANGEROUS

And yes a potato will work as a supressor once, after that its a french fry (if ya didn't blow your face off!!)

You don't want to get caught with a homemade silencer, that carries BIG time penalties.
If the kid feels uncomfortable then I wouldn't push it. Go back to .22's and pellet guns, and ALWAYS have them wear hearing protection.

ear plugs or ear muffs will stop a lot of flinch problems before they start . for target shooting they are a must for kids just starting .

I agree like I said I would never try it. Just don't sound safe. My baby likes a couple years being old enough to fire a weapon. And I shoot guns enough she should be use to them by the time she comes of age.

Why even entertain the thought. With so many legal ways of taming down sound that goes to our ear. Start a kid w/ a BB gun, then a .22, then...... Guide oneself and the kids against thinking of breaking the law or homegrown customizing of a deadly weapon. Let all live by your motto "Live by Christ".

actually it is TWO different sounds. 1. the cartridge firing, creating the muzzle blast. 2. the bullet breaking the sound barrier.

You can silence the muzzle blast but unless the bullet is traveling sub sonic you will still hear the bullet crack, but it will be less than the muzzle blast.

He needs to quit screwing around and get her some real protection in some good muffs.

Get a good pair of muffs and a soft set of earplugs as well. Wear them both.

You might start with a .22 and work your way up to the larger calibers.

Always wear hearing protection while shooting. Especially on young peoples ears. Once you lose hearing sensitivity, you will never get it back.

Depending on the powder capacity and mass of the projectile, a supersonic "crack" can possibly be louder than the "blast" shockwave of the expanding gases from the barrel.
