I'm wondering how everyone else covers larger grain seeds like oats, or anything that needs to be up to an inch in the ground. the last couple of years I've adjusted my disk harrow so only the back row of disk is on the ground and i go over the field with it lightly touching. I've had good luck with that method but I'm thinking there has to be a better way.

Cultipacker is the best option if you can get your hands on one. Easier said than done I know but maybe you can find an old used one

I’ve taken the angle out of my harrow and just scratched the surface ever since I’ve been able to drive a tractor. It is the way to do it with the equipment most ppl have access to.

You can also make your own drag with chain link fence and a metal pole or 4 x4 , or use pallets. I have done both many times before. You just drag them behind a four wheeler , side x side or tractor. It buries the seed for you.

As long as you have it disk fairly well you can time your seed spreading right before a decent rain and you don’t have to cover it.

Chain link fence and 4x4 is what I use.

Does it really matter about the angle of the disc? or is it something everybody has just done and keeps on doing, I never adjust mine and plant oats every year and they come up good

Edit to say, I don't bury the disc either and drag a cross tie behind the disc

More angle means more dirt turning over.

Yep. More angle covers a larger area and leaves a deeper furrow on each pass regardless of depth of the harrow. If you have a lot of angle and drop it to a certain depth you’re still turning more dirt than the same depth with little to no angle. It’s just spreading the dirt you remove from the furrow over a larger area.

I have drug mine with a chain link fence with a wood frame, a pallet, and I have disked it in. I have also broadcast it into standing beans and done nothing. No matter what, then I go back after and add brassicas and clover.

I sort of like to cover them, since the turkeys will be on the fields in a hurry once they figure out there is seed on top.

You should think about EVERYTHING... yes, there are various ways to plant and cover seed. If you've done a great job and you have level ground after you disk and you don't have furrows and mounds of dirt rows all over, you can lightly disk the ground with straight disk and lightly cover the seeds. If your ground is uneven, the disk will cover some seed too deep and not cover some seed at all.

Will the seed germinate after a rain if it's on top of the ground? Of course!!! But that seed that germinates on top of the ground, when being snipped off by a deer immediately after a small amount of growth, will more than likely be pulled up and roots and all will come with it causing the entire plant to be consumed. IF... IF, you have covered your seed appropriately (not too deep... not too shallow), the root system may save that plant from being pulled totally away and possibly saving the plant as the roots will save it from coming all the way out of the ground when a deer pulls on it.

That's the reason why I like my seeds to be covered at the appropriate depth AND, also, turkeys and song birds won't be able to see the seed.

The chain link method mentioned above works great. The disc with no angle works for larger grains but will cover some clovers too deep. I like to cover the grains and then top sew fine clovers and then cultipack.

Chain link fence works great but does not last very long on our rocky soil...

I prefer a 50ft roll of chain link. Leave it rolled up and run a pole or 4x4 thru it and tie a rope to it. The weight has a small footprint and really does well.

you can make a drag out of fence wire OR you can order a ATV drag on the internet from places like Amazon, Northern Tool, Tractor Supply and dozens of other places. Iordered two from Amazon last week. You can choose from $99 to $150 . There are many to choose from
