My plots are doing great with all the rain we’ve had and I wanted to share a couple of pics since I plant mine in rows which appears to be in the minority here. I sprayed them with K Bo yesterday.

General i would love to be able to take the equipment i have and do exactly what you have except rows about 18-24" apart.

My planter and cultivator are set up on 30” and that’s a little wide for chufa but I can ease thru it and plow it a time or two.

Looks good! I always planted on 30" rows when I used a planter, and I think it's a good width to use. My tractor is 60" from center to center of the rear tires, so it was very convenient.

If I had a field that clean, I would just plow it a couple of times and not risk herbicide damage. BTW, what is k bo?

As I’ve stated here before Florida pusley is my biggest nemesis with chufa. I get the field ready to
Plant and let everything sprout and then spray with gly and plant behind it. The gly kills most everything except nut grass which I don’t mind a poor mans chufa being out there. The K Bo is a liquid fertilizer that has potassium, nitrogen, potash and boron. I’ve never used a herbicide after gly just fertilizer.

My 140 is 42" center to center. I thought about planting them with it and overlapping a little somehow.

Thanks for the reply. Google told me that K Bo was a musician of some sort, so I didn't realize it was a fertilizer.

I have some fields that had a lot of nutgrass (yellow nutsedge) naturally, and it has really taken over in places. Only way I've found to deal with it is to leave it fallow for a while. Good luck with it! That field should produce a lot.

If you have a 2 row planter, I believe that you could use 21" rows and it work well. Probably could plow them once and then the rows would almost meet as they matured. I always felt I was wasting a little bit of ground with 30" rows, and if you go with 42" there will really be a lot of space between them. Of course, it's a non issue if you have plenty of land. Better get them in the ground if you are gonna do it this year. Good luck with them

Just joining this thread so the answer to my question could be in here somewhere and I just haven't seen it yet. But I am new to attempting to grow chufa, this is my first year making an attempt. I planted about 40 lbs. on May 15th and put 100 lbs. of 13/13/13 on it, got a ton of rain shortly after planting...now 2 months later, I can see what I think is the chufa but the weeds are very thick, especially on the edges (I planted on a highline). I feel like my only option is to spray it. Initially, I sprayed the area I was going to plant 2 weeks before disking and planting, and sprayed it with Eraser then. I don't think Eraser is what I need to use this time. My question is .. what do I need to spray the plot with now that will kill the weeds but will not kill the chufa plants that are there? I appreciate any feedback and help that you guys can provide.

You didn't tell us how big the area is that you planted, but 40 lbs of seed and only 100 lbs of fertilizer is probably out of sync. That much seed should plant close to an acre, and you probably need at least 300 lbs of T13 on that much land. It's not too late to add more.

You are way behind on spraying and you are not likely to get a clean field spraying at this point. But it's definitely worth doing and knocking the weeds back by any amount is better than nothing. The thing about it when the weeds are 2 months old is that the rates of herbicides needed to completely kill them will probably kill the chufas too. I would spray them at the rates listed in the thread General linked, and put out more fertilizer at the same time.

I have some fields this year that are not pretty at all. I couldn't get them sprayed on time because of all the rain and some personal issues, so the weeds were too big when I finally got to spray them. Those fields are not gonna make max yield, but if it keeps raining they are still gonna make more chufas than the turkeys can eat. So good luck in producing some chufas!

It's not quite an acre but close. Thank you for the feedback. I'll definitely spray it ASAP and put more fertilizer on it as well.

Looks good to me Moody! I have come thru and drilled my plots after they’re done but found that the turkey didn’t like scratching it as much.

Thanks. I just sprayed them with Clethodim yesterday. So all the grasses will be gone. This is the best my plots have ever came up. Planted them July 5th and they are already almost knee high in places.

Just got back from looking at a few of mine. We planted early (mid May), and they are waist high and thick.
