Our place has not dried out sufficiently to work the dirt…post oak mud. In fact, we haven’t mowed the fields yet. What would aldeer do?

A). Keep waiting for better conditions
B). Seed the fields and then mow as soon as conditions allow (no disc)
C). Forge ahead and stick tractor, tear up stuff
D). Put seed money towards corn and skip planting
E). None of the above

Thanks

A or B are most logical and what we would do at my place but in my playbook we always opt for C at one of buddys places. It generally means we break stuff, stick tractors and occassionally dent the hell out of a truck or two but in the end we all had a good time and have greenfields come season.

You still have PLENTY of time to plant

You've got at least another month to plant, if not longer. A. I'm in same boat as you.

Yep, I'm five miles east of you at the Y of 66 &28 in the flat land black dirt. I cut high and slow before the last rain so there would be no windrows knowing there would be little chance of disking, then sprayed this week and most of the thatch has now rotted. Depending on the weather the next couple weeks, and we are getting rain today, I'll scratch checkerboard pattern with the field cultivator to help dry it out, seed a couple days later, scratch it again, then cut the stubble short. Many on here have never dealt with this kind of soil and the number one rule is don't piss it off. You mess with it when it's wet, it will tighten up and turn to brick. The last week of October, if still too wet to cultivate, will seed heavy with wheat then mow. If it’s that wet that late, seed will germinate. Think this is the third time I’ve been in this situation the last 30 years.

I’m planning on planting Oct 15-17. My plots are still too wet from major rain event 2 weeks ago.

Thanks fellas for the replies! I’m going to stay patient and plant late with any luck.

JohnG - I’m in Hugo on Al’s place. I’m sure you know what that mud is like. I’m from Florida and I’ve never seen anything like it! It will turn your tires blue. LOL

I have some of this mud. Very strange to have blue tires.

I remember blue tires from my teenage years hunting in marengo county outside Linden. Toughest mud I've ever seen. When it starts to dry out it's sticky as hell and turns into bricks when totally dry like JohnG said.

Plan A is a no go for us, had a heck of a down pour this morning. Shorter days and cooler temps, this prairie soil will not be tillable till next year sometime. At least it cut high and sprayed except for one field, almost stuck a 135hp tractor with a 15’ cutter in tow.
