My boys wrestle for their High schools/Middle schools, and off season club wrestle. If school season isn’t in, we are traveling the country on the tournament trail. Admittedly, we are nearing the obsession level. Today, one of my younger boys (8th grade, 109 lbs) was asked to go to a club to wrestle a high school kid that’s a 106 lbs weight class just to give him a practice partner. The guy that arranged it told me the kid was a stud and that I needed to prepare my boy that he would be outmatched so as to not be discouraged afterwards. My kid went in there and absolutely SMOKED the older kid. Afterwards my boy walked off the mat, took a big drink of water, smiled at me and just said, “how was that?”

Hard work pays off and age becomes irrelevant when you develop a quality skill set. Congratulations to you and your young man! I know you were one proud Pops, I’m sure you BOTH strutted out of there bowed up like show dogs!

That’s awesome. He is “wired right” to do very well in a individual sport. A good friend has 2 boys that went through school wrestling. They both did great and were constantly wrestling up in weight class and age bc of a small overall team One had the mindset that it fueled his desired to do better if he was beaten, the others confidence was crushed.

Do your sons wrestle against each other very often? We try to keep them in two different weight classes depending on which one is weighing the least. They have had to go against each other many times in tournaments though.

Nice!!! I remember a few of those times...lol
You'll be amazed at how it impacts their drive and work ethic once it's all over. I had a lot of proud dad moments watching mine wrestle, but I'm even more proud of the young man he is today. When company owners, bosses, and various foremen tell you they don't make them like him anymore, you swell up a lot with pride. Love what Jake and his crew are doing with our young men. I don't think they realize the impact they have even after our boys hang their headgear up for the last time. Soak it all up, Mike!

Congrats to you and your Sons. No better sport for a young man. I made every match my Sons sr. Year. You will miss it once its in your blood. What clubs are they in? Their off season club is Ironclad. My younger boys have wrestled with a traveling team some too, while my oldest boy came in 2nd place in the state in freestyle and Greco, making Team Alabama. He has got to travel around the country this past summer representing the state of Alabama, wrestling teams from all over. It’s been a great experience.
