3 or depending on where you are it could be 4. It’s a middle aged deer.

Local deer. 3 was my guess based on body characteristics. I didn’t have time to check him out closely . My face mask fogged up my binos, and he was staring me down. When he finally gave me a chance to swing my gun around , I only had a few steps before he would be out of sight. I’m happy to get him but I thought he was an 8 but ended up a 6.

I've not studied jawbones with game pic history but from what I've studied online appears to be 3-4...congrats

Alabama G&F: Aging deer by tooth wear......2 1/2: Tooth 3 has two cusps (1 1/2 year old has 3 cusp). Tooth 4 has very little wear- that is dentine (dark area) is not as wide as the enamel (white area) that surrounds it. The posterior cusp of tooth 6 shows slight wear........3 1/2: The dentine of tooth 4 is as wide or wider than the enamel that surrounds it, not true of tooth 5. The cusp of tooth 6 shows definite wear and is almost flat.

A learning lesson: The Op did a great photo shot of the teeth. Notice that tooth 4 is not worn (the inside high point) and has more enamel than dentine, and the back half of tooth 6 is not flat and has very little wear. I'm surprise that folks round off the age of the deer to an even number, they are not Christmas born deer. Nobody got the age correct.....

Nope: It is a 2 1/2 because the tooth 4 has little wear. Tooth 4 has to have a lot of wear to be a 3 1/2. Did you not read the Game and Fish info above? I've seen a lot of 2 1/2 year old buck like this deer on BWMA, verified by the check out data sheets. .....

I think everyone on this site or at least most know what months deer are born in Alabama. When someone states a deer is 2 or 3 or 4 years old it is understood that it is 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 or 4 1/2.

Northalabama, that deer is not 2.5. The 3rd premolar has WAY too much wear for that to even be a possibility. In a 2 year old that tooth has just recently been replaced. That tooth on this deer has a minimum of 1 year of wear. It’s understood that a deer is a certain age until he turns the next age. Calling a deer 3 or 4 etc is the same as calling him 3.5 or 4.5. No difference.

And I typically use the totality of information to determine age. Nowhere in AL would that deer be 2 based off that jawbone. He’s likely 3 and could easily be 4 on a LOT of properties with late breeding dates.
