Real quick, stupid question….

I recently moved and decided to update my DL to have my new address. That was last week so I still have the paper/temporary copy. Additionally, I have in my possession the old address hard copy DL (not expired). My question is…

Can I buy a new gun or will the FFL sell me a gun with the paper copy DL? Or just use the old hard copy DL with the old address but put the new address on the background form?

Are both id's from alabama. If so just use the one or the other. The paper id is a legal DL just like the hard copy. From my understanding.

I've never dealt with it, but the paper copy is a legal, gov't issued ID so it [i]shouldn't[i] be a problem

Don’t lie on the form. Bring both DLs with you and an additional form of address verification such as a power bill with your name and the current address. Then it will be up to the dealer as to what they want to accept as residency verification.

That’s what I thought too but when I googled it out of curiosity, I read some posts where people said that it’s up to the FFL on whether or not they would accept it.

I have bought one with a paper license. The issue is when you go in, and if you use your old and they ask if this is your current address, you either have to say yes, or no. If you say no, then you might have an issue. If you say yes, then you are not telling the truth.

Call them in advance and just tell them the situation and ask if it will be a problem. At least that way you're not wasting your time/gas driving up there for no reason

I did that and the guy told me with very little confidence that “it should be fine”. I don’t want to wait because it’s the last one in stock and I don’t wanna have to buy online, get it shipped, transferred, extra fees, and all that jazz.

I know a guy who moved within the same city and didn’t update his DL until it was up for renewal 2.5 years later.

He didn’t have any issues with transfers using the DL with previous address.

Of course his lawyer probably would have advised against it.

Yes, I have bought a gun with a paper DL due to address change. I have also bought a gun with a paper DL due to losing my plastic DL.
