All things considered, I think you’re gonna hit it perfectly if you aren’t too far east. The young bucks are on an absolute tear right now.

We’ve seen a handful of small bucks dog a doe here or there up around Skyline, but nothing that has me overly excited yet. Over towards the river may be a little different though.

OP , if you are hunting central Jackson Co , you're hitting it perfect. I've seen very little chasing , but older bucks cruising and and trailing .

Fantastic time to kill a pre-rut stud cruising and/or checking scrapes though.

I think the most action I’ve ever seen was on Maxwell three years back, last few days of the season. Rutting bucks galore sounded like stuck pigs

Thanks for the replies. Looking forward to romping around that beautiful county. Man you ain’t lying. There’s something about that rugged north Jackson terrain I can’t shake.

It goes back to where the deer released during restocking in the late 50's-early 60's came from and were released . Those way up in east NJ get some TN influence as well. The deer released at Hi-Top and those released on the Jones farm in lower PRV came from different places . Also to add more confusion , deer in central Jackson Co. near the river have some native genes. You can look at the state's rut timing map and the map that shows where the restocking deer came from and it make sense. Sort of , LOL.

So if the rut in north Jackson starts around Jan 4-6, how long does it last? Is it worth investing time and effort hiking up the high ridges this weekend (Jan 13-15)?

They dont rut in jackson county…they materialize from thin air due to an artificial introduction of tobacco juice and methane gas from flatulence…it as all synthesized through a form of fission that is activated by the suns rays after they come in contact and “co mingle”…with the color.. “ blaze orange”….it really is a fascinating process..not another like it anywhere
