Yay or nay?

How do gun safes (guns in the safe) fair in uninsulated attached garages?

Do you need a ‘Golden Rod’ type device to keep humidity in check?

Does the safe need to be up off of the concrete? For steel and alkaline concrete contact reasons?

I’m going to have to downsize if the new safe is going in the house…. I’m trying to plan ahead knowing there will be future gun purchases. Unfortunately, that leaves the garage as the next option for the size I’d like to get.

I have one in my garage. I have a goldenrod in it, and no issues. Mine sits on 4x4's.

I’d anchor it to the concrete if it’s small enough for two people to load up. It’d make you sick if someone left the garage door up one morning and it got stolen.

I keep a golden rod in mine along with a Damp-Rid-Bag.
It is amazing how much moisture collects in the bag every couple of months.

I have one in the garage. Golden rod and a dehumidifier container you bake in the oven. Mine stays around 50-55% humidity according to my gauge.

If somebody can back a pick up truck right next to the safe then it is not really a safe, its just a heavy box with a sign painted on it that says steal me.
With that said, goldenrod should do fine.

If you elevate your garage gun safe on wood, I wouldn’t think treated lumber would be the best option. I’ve used 2x4’s & they seemed to work well.

Would only consider if anchored. I'd want a rubber mat between it
and concrete too. Or just do like a friend of mine. When he built his house he put a storm shelter in ground in the garage. Thats where his safe is.

I have a pact with my next door neighbor. Any extended grinder noise will be met with an armed investigation.
Most safes can be cut with a grinder, but it's gonna make some noise.

Yes mine is in Garage with a dehumidifier rod. Its setting on the floor and ran the chord out of one of the Anchor holes in the bottom. I need to anchor mine. This post reminded me of that.

Curious , why wouldn't you want the safe on treated lumber on concrete ?

Mine is on a pallet in my garage. No dehumidifier. Never had a bit of rust on any of my guns.

Put it on a rubber stall mat from tractor supply and anchor it. A golden rod and a dehumidifier canister will keep it dry.

Putting a safe on a pallet or 4x4s makes it really easy to slide a pallet jack under it.

Not sure about the chemical reaction with concrete on one side, painted steel on the other, and moisture in the middle. I’ve seen some nasty stuff happen with steel and aluminum boats sitting on trailers, with treated boards for trailer bunks.

Guy came into the gun store with a sad face. Told me he had to replace 47 guns that were stolen from his garage. Two safes. At 10 AM a pick up truck backed up to his closed and locked garage. No one home. Three guys got out, one still in the drivers seat. They used a hydraulic jack and raised the garage door, dropped the tail gate, took out a pallet jack, raised safe up, rolled it to the truck and tilted it in. Did the same with the other safe. They fit side by side. His neighbors saw it and by the time they had called the police they were gone. Said it took less than 10 minutes.

I just a roofer put a tin roof on my camp a trailer and I wanted him to use treated wood on the runners. He said that was a big no no, that it would eat on the metal. He said always use untreated wood!

Got mine in the garage, was kinda concerned about it being in there due to humidity. I bolted it down through a rubber stall mat from tractor supply. Have a dehumidifier in the garage that drains into my sink and keeps it 45-50% in there. Have a golden rod in the safe with one of the throw away closet cannisters. Usually stays 37-40% in the safe.

I would skip the future gun purchases and buy a bigger house.

No garage nope. I wouldn’t do it. Put a few small ones in the house.
