Fair warning; this is anticlimactic.
I’ve been with my oldest son when he killed each of his three turkeys, but this was my first turkey ever… and it was about the dumbest “hunt” imaginable.
I set up a decoy in a field ~25 yards away from treeline. Just waited and read my book. Never heard the first gobble. Did a little blind calling at 0600 then again at 0700. Kept looking up and scanning all around me. Never heard anything at all but just happened to look up and this joker is all puffed up and proud looking right at my decoy in the face from like 3’ away. When I looked up and he was standing right there in front of me I about soiled myself. Had my gun laying across my lap. Set my book down slowly and raised Mr. Mossberg up and that was the end of the road for Mr. Tom Gobbler. Nightynight.
And yes, I was wearing gym shorts and sneakers. I had gone up to mow/bush hog and then as an afterthought realized “Oh right, it’s turkey season…might as well try to kill a turkey.” It worked out I reckon.
