It’s weird that how they chirp at a distance but not up close. Went camping over the weekend in the middle of the woods. Never heard any right at you, seemed like they were always at a far.. Yeah, and even though they may be concentrated in one location , they sound like they have you surrounded.

I live in northern Illinois on the Wisconsin border and the mature oaks in my backyard have 1000’s of them crawling around. Some are pale colored with black eyes and some are very dark with red eyes. They haven’t made any sounds so far.
