So I’ve bought a 7mm REM Mag with the purpose of going out west. I wanted something that’s flat shooting and with enough retained energy and velocity to be confident to 500 yards.
I had pile of 154gr Interlocks and made a load over IMR 4831 that shoots MOA so I could deer hunt with it some this year and just shoot it some. I’ve taken the interlocks out to 400 and have no trouble staying on a 10x12 plate.
I looked at every bullet under the sun and with BC, minimum expansion velocity, availability, and priced reasonably well enough I can shoot a lot and practice at range, I settled on the 162 ELDX.
So far I’ve loaded three powders to test. I’ve tested H 100 V and with 59 grains it’s shooting just under MOA. I’ve got an IMR 4831 and H 4350 load to test next. They are all advertising around 2900 FPS so I’ll use whatever is most accurate and shoot across a chronograph later.
Has anyone used that bullet on mule deer, elk, or auodad or something similar? I want to know it’s going to perform when I get the chance. I understand it’s best suited for shots past 200 yards and isn’t the stoutest bullet.

It'll kill him just won't come out the other side. Keep velo under 3K and it'll make one hole. Elk are big but not armor plated.

Norma bondstrike is a very good long range round and from what I can gather has better, more consistent and predictable performance. Sierra tipped game kings are worth looking at too for longer ranges. I’ve been told to stay away from the ELDX. I almost went with the tipped game king. It’s a different bullet than a GK with a heavier shank. I may just use a 150gr TTSX. Its minimum expansion velocity claims 1800 fps. With a 7 rem mag at roughly 2950 fps that equals 600 yards. That’s further than I have any business shooting at game.

My next elk will be shot with a 7-08 and 140 grain Accubonds. My limit is 450 yards. However, it should perform a bit further out.

Since you mentioned elk, here's my thoughts.
If you want to virtually guarantee 2 holes, a 150 gr Barnes TTSX is the answer.
Next choice would be a 160 gr Accubond or Partition.
The 154 gr Interlocks you're using would be a better choice than the ELD M IMO.

A 7MM WSM shooting 140gr NBT going about 3,300 fps, will pass through / double lung a Bull Elk . They will also break a shoulder and stop just under the hide on the opposite side. Been there, done that.

Boom! I agree. I definitely think there are better options than the ELD-X. Not that it is horrible but I think Hornady has done an excellent job of marketing it! This is sound advice!

I was not impressed with the performance of a 143gr ELDX on whitetails out of my 6.5 PRC’s. The TTSX or Nosler rounds would be a much better choice in my opinion.

Most guys I know that tried the ELDX bullets have all switched. I hear really good results from the Norma bondstrike bullets. I switched or is in the process of switching everything to the Barnes TTSX.

Didn't care for performance out of the creed, but been purty much lights out with my 6.5 prc and my Son's 300 prc 🤷🏾♂️ Gonna see what the 7mm prc will do, ifn ever get around to mounting a scope (which i have)
Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!
