I took my kids and Travis’s kids up to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville area’s over the long weekend. We went to play laser tag one night. There was the 6 of us from my group and another group of about 6-8 in one game. It was a free-for-all every man for himself type of game in the arena they had set up. Dimly lit course with plenty of hidey holes, black lights and etc. My daughter is 6 and was kind of nervous so I told her to just stick with me and I would show her how it’s done. I considered it an alliance.
I saw my competition. I was definitely the Alpha in the room. Maybe the only person to ever handle a gun on a regular enough basis to be familiar with aiming and shooting. I was primed and set up for success when it came time for Old pops to impress his young daughter.
The gear that we wore had an audible alert if you made a good shot, or if you were hit. “You’ve been hit” and “Good shot”. It had targets on the shoulders, front chest and back.
The game began. Myself and my daughter systematically and strategically started our demolition of our competition. Total domination was in effect. My gear was rattling out “Good shot” so fast that it sounded like an auctioneer trying to earn a commission.
Until, all of a sudden, it didn’t. From somewhere- I started getting tagged as fast as I could do the tagging. I was in shock. I had over estimated my competition. There was someone with the skills of a special force unit hiding somewhere in this room. We worked the room, me leading the way, shielding my daughter from harms way, but I just couldn’t get away from this precision fire that I was under. I started hearing my daughter giggling. I assumed at my open aggregation of the situation and my inability to get out of harms way.
The giggling got louder and louder and eventually turned into laughter. I turned around, to explain to her that this is no time for laughing!
What did I see???? Her little laser barrel pointing directly at my back! Firing away. Racking up a high score while I provided her infinite safety.
I was tricked!
At that point I did what any father hates to do and sent her on her own. To fend the world off by herself. 😁
After it was over I asked her why she turned on me. “It was every man for himself from the beginning, I needed you to help me win”, was her response.
She might be 6yo, 38lbs and 42” tall, but she’s as competitive as they come. 😂
I’ve trained her too well.
The fool tells me his reasons; the wise man persuades me with my own.

I learned quickly not to trust any of my daughters if there was competition involved. Im also the reason they all have trust issues today.
Its not the will to win but the will to prepare to win!
