I know this is a long shot, but do any of you guys know how to sail?

Me and the wife want to get 2 other couple friends of ours and fly over to the US Virgin Islands, rent a 50' catamaran sailboat, and island hop for 7-10 days. Problem is I have pretty much zero sailing experience. I have ran big boats before but never a sailboat. I mean, I know the concept and somewhat know the lingo but have zero experience actually captaining a sailboat.

Are we biting off more than we can chew?

Yes.

Hire a captain and split the cost. It’s not as expensive as you would think.

This…. Enjoy the trip. Let someone else stress about it. Maybe even get in a little fishing

$300 a day plus tip. So almost a grand. I just don't know if I would like sharing the boat with a stranger. I could take that 3 grand and probably just get a powered catamaran. I would have no problem with that.

Do you guys think at worst we could just motor everywhere? It says it will make 8-9 knots under power. I think if we sailed at 50% wind speed we would be about the same speed right?

Sorry I might be making an incorrect assumption there.

There is a reason I have a 150 hp mercury.

I think Dixie Sailing Club on Lake Martin offers sailing lessons.

I thought about doing that here too. It would be next spring before we went so I would have some time to learn somewhat what to do.

You most definitely could power everywhere and truthfully that is what more than you would think are doing in the islands anyway. The boats are just more comfortable on certain points of wind with a sail up even f you are motor sailing. Just keep the amount of sail out very small until you are comfortable with the motions and be extremely careful with a wind from any point behind as this in when you can have accidental gybes and break things. That is a lot of boat though and I would be surprised that the outfitters would rent it to someone without sailing experience . I have had several sailboats over the years if you have any questions. Anchoring safely is definitely something you want to study up on if you never have had to rely on an anchor in a storm or want to be able to sleep soundly. Sounds like an awesome vacation!

And to answer the question about speed. With a sailboat that is adequately powered(most charter boats are as a majority of their customers are going to power more than sail) the speed under full power will be very close to what you can achieve under sail in fair conditions. Currents, sea conditions, and unfavorable wind conditions are when the sails can really help out.

Thanks for the sound advice Southal. I've anchored boats up to 65 foot but the biggest cat boat was a 34'. From what I understand, about 75% of the time there are mooring balls available. But the boat will be equipped with a windless and a bridle. All should be shallow water anchoring barring an emergency. And the route will not be open water for the most part. We will just be island hopping in protected waters.
