Does anyone know what causes this? I’m talking about the small ones that are usually just between the base and the brow tine. My buddy killed one the other day that had these bumps way up the main beams and up the tines some. A lot more than the average deer. I was just curious if there was something that would cause it.

I’ve found that the older the buck the more pronounced those bumps are. I’ve killed some older bucks that those bumps were so big you could almost count them as a point. Especially in Missouri.

"Most holes you see in antlers are from the work of the botfly larvae, which starts as an internal parasite. Parasites thrive easily on easily accessible food. That's why it's not unusual for a buck's antlers to become the host of warbles (botflies). "

Most biologists refer to it as “pearling” or beading. Generally an indication of good nutrition during the antler growing period. Most common in older bucks IMO due to the fact that in years 1-4, most of the nutrition consumed is used for skeletal and body development. Once fully grown physically, racks are more prone to be expressive of nutritional variables .

Those bumps are like notches on a guys belt. rofl
Truthfully you don’t see them on young deer typically and you don’t usually see them on deer with inferior racks. Other than that I have no idea.

Abolt got it. I don’t see them nearly as distinct in areas lacking adequate nutrition. They are very common on mature bucks in good habitat.

This could be the reason some small bucks can really skin up a tree.

I was told by an old man once that if you wanted to see a deer have a lot of those on it's antlers to feed them roasted soybeans. Which goes back to the nutrition side. better the nutrition more you will see i guess.
