Sounds like some of you are going to take a big hit. I would suggest you rebalance your portfolios if you haven't already. And also decide how much you are willing to lose. Probably take a risk tolerance survey online somewhere. 100% equities, 0% bonds, I’ll let it ride the waves and care about the results in 20 years. Primarily in Total US & Large but have a fair bit in small/mid cap as well. If it is all mutual funds you have to be careful. Just because some funds say they are X-asset class doesn't mean that is what it is. Some can vary greatly. So, you may have much more international weight or more large cap (for example) than you think. Either way, rebalancing annually (riding the wave longer than quarterly) will increase your returns. The asset classes are more correlated today than when Bernstein and others banged the asset allocation drum (mostly for indexed funds) really starting in the late 90's. When the large ETFs and indexed funds follow the market today it is kind of a double whammy for those who don't rebalance. If I’m buying Total Market Funds like VTSAX/FZROX those funds are diversified by virtue of being total market funds, yes they’re often skewed towards Large Cap though. Large Cap/S&P500 funds like FXAIX/FNILX are straight, the biggest 500 or so companies and also make up a large portion of the portfolio I have very little in stuff like REITs, International, category specific like Healthcare or single stocks. About 6% of my total portfolio is in the directly above. Average 401K in my age bracket(25-34) is $38,000 & median is $15,000…

I’m not fully convinced that my 401k can outpace inflation to make a comfortable retirement even with significant contributions at my age of 32. Maxing out an 401K($23,000 annually) over a career, Roth IRA for you/your wife($14,000 annually) and some other supplemental investments like HSA(triple taxed advantage) brokerage or real estate(not your primary residence) and you’ll be more than fine. Check the average&median for our age bracket in my post above…ouch NGMI

I’ve been through the “I can’t afford it” stage myself, regarding maxing out my 401k. The sooner you realize the tax savings basically offset the money you don’t bring home, the better. I’m at the “catch-up” phase in my retirement, and kicked mine up to 30% three years ago. I prob bring home 150.00 less a week, BUT the feeling of saving 4-500.00 A WEEK is crazy good. You wanna see your 401k jump, try the max for a month or so and see. I jumped ship when it was around 41-42,000. I lost by getting out (prime example), but I’m happy to have locked in some huge gains. When it drops, I’ll roll back in and ride it up. An adjustment is coming …. But when?

I’ve been playing an aggressive “catch up” with my deferred comp and couldn’t/wouldn’t be able to it if my wife didn’t work, also. My first paychecks of the year are real light….think “Raising Arizona” paycheck scene, light, “The Guv’ment, she do take a bite, don’t she?” Only difference is I’m playing guv’ment to myself!
experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

I’m not fully convinced that my 401k can outpace inflation to make a comfortable retirement even with significant contributions at my age of 32. Completely false. I’m 32 and we max out all of our retirement accounts. It’s one of the best things to combat inflation right now.

Hope you didn't forget to put quite a bit in non-qualifued accounts while your earnings are lower. Plus, land and farm ground provide a hedge against inflation and those write-offs are your friend. Not to mention the other benefits. 😀

FYI , Warren Buffet's Berkshire-Hathaway owns controlling interest in several big pipeline companies , Those MLP's pay some nice dividends. That's what will fund my retirement.

It’s bad in all age brackets but it’s really really bad in the 50+ age brackets because they have the least amount of time to fix it. I can say that my 401K is absolutely massively inflating the average in my age bracket. Wild that the median never breaks $90,000…ouch NGMI ![[Linked Image]](https://i.postimg.cc/pTdrDSgJ/IMG-5090.png)

FYI , Warren Buffet's Berkshire-Hathaway owns controlling interest in several big pipeline companies , Those MLP's pay some nice dividends. That's what will fund my retirement. Yes pipelines , petrol and strong banks as a rule pay good dividends . I have some HBAN shares, it got pulled down ' 23 when banks took a dump, since then it's up 60% and pays a nice dividend . Strong numbers for a regional bank.

I’m not fully convinced that my 401k can outpace inflation to make a comfortable retirement even with significant contributions at my age of 32. If it doesn't , over a working career , you must be invested very conservative for the full time . You shouldn't have any problems if you have some time left and are invested correctly.
