Her school was closed on Thursday. She ran errands with me that morning, and had plans for an afternoon hunt post nap. We head to the property around 2 and had to fix a spin feeder first. We slipped in a box on the opposite side of the land by 3:00. She played on her pad as I listened in on a work call that ended around 3:40. After that I made us a little fire for cover scent in my mini solo stove. Around 4:15 she got bored of her pad and asked where the deer were at, and if they were still hiding.

Shortly thereafter 2 big does and a yearling came out and came within 20yds of the box. They were downwind smelling and feeding on edge, but never spooked. They eventually fed off. She did great staying quiet while looking at them. Now much closer to 5 and the deer being gone she was looking around and noticed my grunt tube laying on the shelf and she asked what’s that? I explained to her and of course she started begging me to blow it.

I obliged and not a minute later he stepped out at 120yds down a lane. He worked a scrape then another closer to us. She said shoot him! He turned broadside at around 90yds and I squeezed off the 30-30 and thought I could hear him crashing towards the bottom. We waited about 10 minutes and went check for blood as it began to sprinkle/rain. I could not find a drop, or any hair. We backed out and didn’t foul the area. I told her we will just head home and I’d come back in the morning with Fred(my dad’s Teckel).

On the ride home she of course told everyone her dad had missed a big buck. I got up before daylight and had would have until 8:00 before I had to drive to Pensacola for work. I got out there and let Fred out the truck to stretch her legs before we headed down the shooting lane. I let her work ahead of me and as she got close to where I thought he had been standing she got “birdy”. She headed downhill and at about 50yds down the track she veered left hard then corrected herself. I stayed behind her the whole time and once we hit the hardwoods she got out to left of the line and I lost visual of her for a minute. As I spotted her again she was standing on him. 130yd recovery. I could not see any blood or exit wound.
