I have picked up an Ithaca model 37 20 gauge recently and I cannot find a ton of info on them online. I'm pretty sure mine is a 1948 model based on the serial 164xxx. It has the standard ducks stamped on one side of the receiver and a bird dog with pheasants on the other. The barrel is also marked 1. Cyl. and I keep getting conflicting info on the constriction. Most say it should be marked 0. for open cylinder and 1. for imp. Cylinder. Anyone similar with this model or have a resource I can find more information?

Model 37’s are one of the finest pump shotguns ever made, IMO. I’ve got an 80’s vi rage featherweight model and will never let it go

I'm pretty sure this one does not have the disconnector and will slam fire. I can't find a ton of info on these guns though. This one is marked 1. Cyl. and I can not find details as to if it's a featherweight or standard weight gun. Maybe I can post some pics later and that would help in ID. This barrel measures 25-1/2" from the front of the receiver. Looks to be regular American walnut with not much grain and no checkering. It's been well used but not abused. Action is silky smooth and the bore looks bright and clean of pitting. It's super light and points well. It would be heck on quail and maybe a few woodies. I plan on patterning it soon as well.

I don't believe it's supposed to slam fire.

Some pump fire , they fire after lock up meaning the firing pin is not protruding before the bolt locks up. I reckon some do it and some don't depending on years made. Slam firing , the firing pin is protruding and fires before lock up. Slam firing is dangerous and not good for the gun. Least that's the way I understand it .

I am not sure of the term, but I have a couple and they fire on reload, if the trigger is held down. One trigger pull and you can empty every round in it.

The Nazis called that a war crime when our doughboys did it with 1897 Winchesters. I think Ithaca is still in business in Ohio somewhere.

This is correct and I think the 37 is the only pump gun designed to operate like that

Ithaca 37 and Winchester Mdl 12 will both slamfire. May be others, but I know those two models will.

Winchester M12s and M97 ( 97 has an exposed hammer) will shoot if you have the trigger pulled . They are designed that way. They shoot after lock up and only with the trigger pulled , not a true slam fire . You have to make it do it. I shot, for years and now own my Grandfathers M12 , I never knew it would do it till a few years ago.

I learned the hard way, but thankfully no injuries were the result. I grew up squirrel hunting with MT curs. My dad always made us carry the guns unloaded until we made it to the tree. One cold cold morning 30 to 35 years ago, I made it to the tree and loaded up. My brother popped the squirrel with a 22 lr and it fell dead, no need for the scatter gun. I was unloading as we were making our way to the squirrel and I didn't realize that the tip of my glove was inside the trigger guard. It seemed like the whole world stopped as the blast came out of the barrel that was about a foot over my dad's head. He preached gun safety to us constantly. I had been through the process hundreds of times with groups and by myself, it was just a mistake on my part. I was ready to take the worst whipping I could imagine. He just shook his head and acted like it never happened. Up to that point, I just thought I was aware of my surroundings when handling a gun, it made me 100 times more aware from then on. I am hard on my son about gun safety and everytime he acts like I am being to rough on him, that plays over and over in my head.

Was at a dove shoot many years ago, there was a feller in the group with a borrowed Model 97. We were standing around the trucks , choosing spots and loading up. This feller with the borrowed 97 pumped one in the pipe, it went off and bout blew another fellers feet off . Scary stuff!
