Guys it’s been 15 years since I’ve shot a vertical bow and a lot has changed. I’m going back to shooting a bow and wanted everyone’s opinion on the best release for hunting.

A release is a very personal choice, much like bow models. Boils down to what feels right for you. Do you want a hand held or a wrist style? I shoot hand helds with a thumb trigger exclusively now. It’s nice to sit in the stand and not have to worry about having a release strapped to my wrist. My release is clipped on my D-loop and my bow is on a hanger. The model I’m most comfortable with now is a Carter Chocolate Lite four finger.

If you decide to go with a wrist style, in my opinion, Scott is the best. Hand held you can’t go wrong with Carter or Tru-Ball. Releases can be pricey now. Make sure you get one you’re 100% comfortable and confident with. If you go with a wrist style the most important tip I can give you is to not get one with a damn Velcro strap. Get a buckle or one with the Boa system.

I shoot a Spot Hogg Wiseguy BOA wrist and a Stan OnneX Clicker handheld.

There are a lot of good releases these days and really need to try and see what you like best. After this season, I will most likely stick with a wrist release for hunting. While grabbing my bow to shoot a buck this last bow season, the button on my Onnex hit something along the transition and fell to the ground costing me an opportunity.. Could have been avoided should I had been paying attention a little better but nonetheless, it wouldn't have happened with the wrist release.

What sucks is that I feel I am more accurate with the handheld.

Scott releases on the wrist strap for me. I run and gun for elk and no way I'm risking losing my release 10 miles in on a hunt. With that said, I use the same release whitetail hunting since I shoot year 'round with it.
